There's a lot of truth in that quote about the monotony of life, but you know what? Literally, no one is making you be this "cog" you speak of. Go out and do something else and give your life purpose. It isn't that hard to do.

Everything regarding work grew out of the want for a better lifestyle than previous generations. Imagine if the unions had not settled on the American work week. Jobs would still be 12 hrs a day or more. Consistently.
Bloviating upon the evils of working has always been the place of pseudo-intellectual. Many of those who have personified this role, who modeled themselves into a projection of being an academic of sorts, came from a background that could afford them the time to occasionally have a thought worth sharing. Many of these thoughts simply confirmed the belief of those who grew up poor. Work is for those determined to do better, not worse.
My 79yr old grandfather, who grew up the son of a share dropper, lamented in our conversation on Tuesday about the current state of younger generations. Their unwillingness to work, and their consistent want for everything to be given to them, saddens him. He was given nothing. He had to do both farms chores and homework. Yet, through HARD WORK, he ended up a rich man. He is wealthy far beyond words in those things that are not sustainable through work alone. He is loved, he is wise, and he is a Godly, giving man. Yet he is also worldly wealthy, both monetarily, and in erudition.
Quit whining about your current lot in life. Work your arse off for a time, and just maybe you can retire earlier than you ever imagined. Or perhaps, you continue your whining and never wholeheartedly throw yourself into a career. Thus you flounder in the waves of life as they crash about you. Ever striving to keep your head afloat. Whereas if you had learned to freestyle, instead of barely knowing how to doggie paddle,.you would be safely ashore. Because it is just there, ever within the reach of those willing to work towards it.

You're right. Modern life sucks. We live too long and the monotony of office work is unbearable.

what a fricking strange thread...
basically, we work hard and everything that everyone does makes for a good, comfortable, and secure standard of living for our society as a whole...without that collective effort, the standard of living that we enjoy gets proportionally lower...if the idea is, that we should not do our share and expect others to pick up the slack, well, that just sucks...
if we decide that we will settle for a lower standard of living, then chose any of the other societies available around the world and go for it...you might very well find somewhere that has a shorter work week or more vacation each year...but one day they might find that system unsustainable and meltdown (i.e. greece)...
