IIRC he had a rapid long fall like many in his generation. They started when UFC was emerging and used Dana and the Fertitas' gratitude to get fights when they probably should've been on Strikeforce (which is what Shamrock did). I believe Dana was done with him when he started showing mental instability. It's a shame so many of them didn't follow GSP's career path that has left him in relatively "normal" shape.
