I had to Google when it was banned and apparently it was 1988 but you could still smoke on flights over 2hrs all the way up until 2000! I flew back and forth between Dallas and N.O. a lot as a kid after my parents divorced and remember being crammed in there with people chain smoking on Southwest flights. Seems insane to think about.

Commercial airplanes are required to have them still. In case someone jonesing lights up inflight there is a safe place to dispose of it.
