Ever wonder why the suicide rates for veterans are so high?

Because they get absolutely no respect from mainstream media networks or society. For those who don't know, Ronnie McNutt was an Iraqi War veteran who was livestreaming on Facebook in August of 2020. He was clearly unhinged and suffered from severe PTSD. During the livestream, he shot himself in the head with a bolt-action rifle (no I will not post the link to the actual video). This website was making fun of the poor guy after it happened.

quote:

Ronnie McNutt became famous for having one of the gayest last names in the history of the world,

He was worthless and had no life. Former soldier and United States Army spokesman Ronnie McNutt is a veteran of the military service.

LINK

This guy was treated like absolute shite after he died. School kids were making TikTok memes about him, because his suicide video went viral on TikTok and was inserted into algorithms which was seen by mostly kids.

Like what the frick people? This was a fricking veteran who needed help.

Younger people are disconnected from many harsh realities and it makes them come across deeply insensitive. The internet is all a game to them.

Some things really don’t need to be seen by anyone. A troubled veteran killing himself being one of them. It’s such a shame that our vets suffer as they do and even more upsetting is that chickenshit response from people online who have never done anything for anyone but themselves. Just so very sad.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this isn't exclusive to veterans. It's definitely a commentary on the callousness that has developed in society post-introduction of social media because so many people can make these criticisms anonymously and without repercussion. Let's be honest, look at some of the shite that's posted on this very website.

Severe PTSD can absolutely have a strong correlation with SI and attempts. Sometimes there's not enough treatment in the world to stop it either.

If anyone here is struggling with PTSD, talk to a specialist about HBOT. I’ve had friends go off drugs completely. It’s expensive, but there are groups out there that help with funding.

One of the reasons I never post for someone to kill themselves on here. You truly don’t know what somebody is going through and it’s not a joke nor funny to throw that out there.

If he killed himself, how would he know that people were making fun of him?

When he shot himself while livestreaming, people commenting made jokes after the fact. The full uncut video is online, although having watched it myself I don't recommend watching it as it's pretty traumatizing.

Or, more likely it’s because they either see horrible shite that traumatically changes them or they have a personality that struggles without rigid order and can’t adapt to life after the military.

Probably has way more to do with the types of person that self selects for the military and what those people see/do and very little to do with how they’re portrayed in the media.

Also, while I may be in a bubble, veterans get wayyyyyyy more kudos than criticism in my circles.

McNutt knew what the consequences were when he did a livestream.

For some of these Vets with severe PTSD and/or multiple deployments, what the military should mandate is a 1-2 year reintegration program where they still live in monitored conditions, have structure and mission, but that mission changes from defense to education, family integration, community integration, self-care, not resorting to unsafe use of substances, all the while having full benefits of an active duty service member. Now, I'm not sure how you can mandate this after one has fulfilled his/her obligatory contract -- perhaps in some way make it so appealing that they'd be foolish to turn it down. Double their in-service pay, provide housing, food, transportation, education, healthcare in exchange for successful reintegration and incrementally meeting goals aimed at such.

Why are so many vets who never even deployed killing themselves though?
Also, McNutt was a reservist mechanic.

Don't think I care why the difference. Brothers and Sisters in arms, going out the wrong way. We could probably ban social media and solve 50% of the problem.

Everyone makes fun of REMFs, but I was also a Navy brat, and have a keen understanding of what everyone left stateside (or at a port overseas) dealt with, and how they mirrored their anger back onto the people that were deployed.

There are plenty of shammers, I'm sure, but to take the Navy as an example, ship readiness is deprioritized over non operational issues. Multiple collisions of ships, and nothing seemingly changes? Then you get berthed on a barge

quote:

Enter the Auxiliary Personnel Lighter (APL), the Navy’s solution for temporarily housing sailors when their warships are uninhabitable because of repairs, giant fires, or anything else that would keep them ashore for longer than usual.

We can keep going:
quote:

“It’s literally the worst experience of my life,” wrote another. “It was so bad that on duty days I would sleep on the ship (which had no AC and I live in Florida). Ours was infested with roaches and bed bugs. I and many others I know wouldn’t even shower on it.”

And another said, “Prepare to live with cockroaches and mice. Here’s some advice, get an apartment.”

The most scathing criticism we found stated simply: “When we were assigned a barge when our ship was decommissioning it was the most vile, disgusting thing I had ever been aboard.”

Why weren’t ww2 shock troops commit suicide at such a high rate?
