I spotted this unique "leucistic" raccoon this evening. I've never seen one like it before. Is this guy blonde or piebald, or both?

I gave him some chicken.

Then these guys showed up.

quote:

leucistic: an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation affecting various animals (such as birds, mammals, and reptiles) that is marked by overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring and is caused by a genetic mutation which inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers, hair, or skin.

He kept staring and sneaking towards us. Cat? No. Dog? No. Possum? No. Fox?! No! WTF! That white face threw me off at first, took me a minute to realize it was a mutant raccoon.

I don’t know the answer, but I’ve only heard the term “piebald” applied to horses.

Never seen a raccoon that looks like that either, so maybe piebald is the appropriate word. Albino comes to mind, but that doesn’t seem right.

Awesome find and great pictures.

I thought this thread was about a new nickname for lady parts.

Found this on Wikipedia. Seems to match. Are you in south Florida?

Edit: Nevermind my question on location, just saw you’re in SELA.

I was hoping this thread wasn't about the actual animal.

I believe piebald is a term specifically for horses.

it's not piebald...it's leucistic, sometimes referred to as blonde...a lot of people mistake leucistic animals for albino because they aren't familiar with leucism...

He's very cool looking. I hope you gave his buddies some. The last thing we need is racoons rioting because you only gave the white one some chicken.

Grats on the new critter friends. It'll take a while before they stop showing up.

My dog would have never let this photo happen. I'm jealous. Great coloring though.
