What’s with the downvotes?

Free is correct. My Dad’s parents were dirt poor and picked cotton until he was a teenager. This was looong after slavery.

Tell me the OT isn’t ignorant enough to believe that only African Americans picked cotton?

No, sir, they do not.

In the cotton belt, particularly, it was a unifying experience of the poor, black and white - most of the able-bodied men (and many women) either tried to farm a small patch of their own, worked as sharecroppers or as straight field hands for pay, really all the way until World War II and it wasn't uncommon in the post-War era until at least the 1960s.

They do but most of the OT also knows that some white people love watermelon but that don’t make it less stereotypical.

She said “all the black people”, when actually it was only “some” of the black people.

The black people who were behaving probably didn’t appreciate the statement.

That, and hangings. Black folk think they have cornered the market on that even though it was a form of capital punishment for centuries.

The people on reddit are trying to say the phrase “cotton picking” is racist...do they not know that the poor of all races picked cotton in the pre-industrial south? Definitely not race specific

This is true. The Brits brought in Indians to work their colonial cotton fields after slavery ended. My father can't talk about India or anybody from there without working "cotton picking Indian" into the conversation.

When did this country get so offended by words? It’s words.

Forever. Burr and Hamilton dueled over Hamilton making disrespectful remarks at a dinner party.

Black men got lynched for saying the wrong words.

Get your head out of the sand.

My grandmother was the sweetest thing ever and in church every time the door was open.

She would drop the "N" word like it was anything else, it was shocking to us as kids.

An ex gf had this ancient great grandmother (over 100 years old). She still spoke Arabic and French in addition to English. Anyways, she had this medium sized black dog (lab or australian shepherd mix) named Abit. She loved that dog, but it was a habitual line-stepper (always trying to get on the furniture when she wasn’t looking) and she would fuss at it in Arabic.

I found out later the name Abit roughly translated to “little black slave boy” and was definitely a major prejorative term, basically the Arabic version on the n-word. So, imagine your grandma having a little dog named n&$$@r.

Then her statement was wrong, but not racist. It was rude, and kind of crazy, but not racist.

The word has a very specific meaning that has been co-opted and now statements that are rude and socially unacceptable, are being called racist.

Describing actions you see, even if incorrect, are is not racist.
