I sometimes revoke time off and let the person take PTO without it counting against them as a reward if they had been performing well

You do realize not getting that PTO probably a decent % of the time means they didn't get to plan that vacation or buy whatever they needed to do that thing. Then you just gave them that day or time off so they can sit around and no longer go on that vacation that they could have gone on had you just approved the PTO.

The only times I’ve seen it done is when someone has an essential operational job and a coworker either is extremely I’ll and in the hospital, or a coworker has a death of a very close relative.

FWIW, that is wrong too. There is literally no legit reason to revoke an already approved PTO that makes it ok. None, not a single one.

This. And if you actually did, let him know the cost for you to cancel needs to be reimbursed to you before you are willing to cancel. Direct deposit today would be fine. Include every cent you spent including snacks for the trip.

Or tell him no.

Sounds like you work for a shitty boss. Likely a shitty company with a shitty culture too.

Generally, you just tell him no, it was approved and you won't be there. And that's that. It's a hill to die on, easily.

But if you truly are in a spot where you can't lose that paycheck, then you want to immediately start looking for a job right now, today. I'd still fight this up the chain of command as far as I could and 100% still be calling out that day. But again, that's only as a last resort if you simply can't miss a single paycheck.

But either way, I would not be at work that day.

it also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a decent savings. even if it may not be "frick you" money, you can still say "frick you" for sorry shite like this and not be in an "i need this job" frame of mind. they bank on that.

i have frick *you* money, but nowhere near frick you money

same brother. same.

this thread got me fired up. when i worked in louisiana every boss i had treated me like they were doing me a favor just letting me have a job.

it was night and day soon as i moved to colorado. they dont try and run the dog shite out of you. dont threaten you with how easily you could be replaced etc. it took me a couple years to get out of that "i better not do anything thatll piss someone off" mentality that had me scared to call in sick. im pullin for OP to find some serious leverage and ruin his boss' holiday somehow.

We must be talking past each other.

1) Person A submits PTO request.
2) Tide06 approves request for 8hrs
3) Day before trip tide06 denies request and texts Person A thanking them for their work and telling them to enjoy their trip
4) 8hrs of PTO are returned to person A and person A goes about their PTO as planned

He eventually got pushed out.

When I worked at the Nuke plant they would stick people running departments and they always failed. But instead of firing them they would just move them to another department. It’s like the four tires on your car. You can move them around as much as you want, but you didn’t improve productivity by simply moving a person that sucks

See, the thing is, PTO actually stands for Prepare The Others -cuz I won't be here. As others have mentioned, letting him bully you back to work sets dangerous precedence, for you and for others.

Don't quit outright, but look for a new place to work. And document, document, document.

It was approved,

Yeah, in this case, everything after the word "approved" is horseshite. I'd cause a big stink about it and see how much he really cared. That shite is going up the ladder and to HR.

Log in like work remotely? I’d log in and go about my day as planned and save the pto

I spoke to him and expressed my frustration. It's a holiday weekend and I'm already working Saturday and Sunday for month end.

He kept prying saying my presence was needed. I said I'm staying on PTO. I was asked to join several meetings throughout the day because of a lack of knowledge with other employees.

I responded that if I was available I would, but no promises.

ETA: yes I work remotely. I manage a team, but I typically have 20+ meetings per day so I can't just log in and go do something else.

Probably, this job sucks though. I'm a director and the pay is nice is the only reason I stay.

Most of my days I work 7 till 5. Then have to get on teams on my phone to be in meetings while taking my kids to after school things. It never fricking ends.

If I'm sitting around doing nothing I don't mind jumping on a call. I'm not going to get out of the pool or stop cutting grass to get on a call.

Are you actively looking for new jobs?

If not, get on that. There are better jobs out there, guaranteed. With WFH nowadays, the possibilities are pretty endless.

if it was already approved then no. he can frick off.

if he makes hell about it start looking for employment elsewhere. if youre good at what you do there plenty of open positions in anything right now. They obviously dont respect you at your current position.
