I put in for July 3 about a month ago, my boss and a peer put in for it after me.

It was approved, now he is saying I need to cancel and log in for the day.

I'm pushing back on it and trying to determine how pissed I should be.

Tell him he already approved and you made plans based on said approval.

Prior to approval, yes. Post approval is a dick move.

Best way is to have already paid for tickets or something non refundable but you'll probably need proof of that.

I'd be fricking pissed that they even asked.

And I would say that you have a lot of money tied up in plans that you can't get back. Sorry, not sorry.

Not in 35 years.
My first job ever at age 15 I planned a fishing trip with my dad on a day I wasn’t scheduled to work.
Owner was an a-hole and everyone hated him. He tells me the day before that he needed me to come in and that the fishing trip wasn’t that important.

Went to lunch that day and never went back to work.

Be a man and say you won’t be working. Don’t leave room for discussion

Yes.

That boss was hated by his reports for a number of reasons including that. He couldn’t plan more than a few hours ahead so he would constantly schedule last minute meetings and demand weekend work. He couldn’t lead. Nobody he ever worked with wanted to help him on his projects. They moved me into his role to clean things up because he was a disaster. He got really pissed.

He eventually got pushed out.

I’ve got one right now that once asked me at 4pm on a Friday why my whole team couldn’t be available at 2pm on a Saturday. He didn’t realize that we had accomplished every one of our goals and were ahead of schedule That guy is not one of us. He’s not going to be a lifer at this company. You can’t do that kind of shite and climb the ladder in this industry. People will not want to be around you, so you will struggle to accomplish things as a leader.

This seems like something I could do and still not do any work.

On top of that, I will be logged in working on both Saturday and Sunday for month end activities. No extra perks for that.

You should be pissed. I’ve never heard of revoking one, but I’m a firm believer in not approving them if not given enough lead time and not handling things before.

Just forward the approval back to your boss and cc HR. Don't say anything except to please see attached PTO approval. And Roll.
