My mother is the reason I moved so far away.

She’s pretty horrible to me and always has been. BB can back me up.

reading through a lot of these replies confirms my belief that religion is absolutely toxic to this world. yes, it does some good but it isn't worth it to me.
While my mom is Catholic, we weren’t raised in a religious household and were taught to find our own beliefs on religion and I truly believe that my siblings and I had the greatest parents you can ask for.

I think religion can be a great thing, a beacon of light and hope for people who are struggling and need guidance but at the same time I realize that it’s not for me. There are too many people who think that being religious makes you a good person and being non religious makes you a terrible one and that your beliefs make you who you are more than your actions do.

That being said, this thread has really opened my eyes to the amount of suffering some people go through as kids and has made me realize that this kind of thing is a lot more common than I thought. I’m glad to see that most of y’all have made peace with it though and have made sure to break the cycle and raise your kids with love and respect.

Oh hush!

was only saying hello.

I, as well, have had a few emotional beat downs from my mother. However, I try my best to understand/remember that it is because of her own mother-- or I tell myself that to help tolerate her.

How do you say you don't give a shite, because I would never change my life for her, but her anger at me is still...unfounded?

What you want to say is it hurts. You want her to accept you and love you even if she doesn't approve. We all want that from our parents.

I explained to her my more risqué lifestyle and she was appalled. JHC woman, I am the product of an affair. I guess I just wonder where that woman is, why she pretends she just doesn't understand me. She wasn't so different once

That may be why she is appalled. She sees her own shortcomings in your behavior (not arguing pro or con, that's a whole other discussion). It reminds her of what she did and how she hurt others she was supposed to care about, yourself included. She may want to spare you her pain but is emotionally unequipped to share that in a positive manner.

I don't envy your position or your mom's. She probably longs for a better relationship as well but has no idea how to achieve that. What was her relationship with her mother like? That may hold a few keys for you.
