It wasn't the buildings.. It was the participants in the post MLK parade celebrations we were afraid of, and the looks we were getting...

oh, I gotcha.
One thing that strikes me as odd about the wank, is all the random abandoned cemeteries. I think there is one on Ames. They are all over, you will just see weeds and old crypts next to crack houses out there. No respect for the dead.

In Phoenix, every year after the MLK parade, there was a gunfight. They never missed a year no matter how many police were present!
The gunfight was always on the route I took to go home. I tried to leave early to get past that area before the "celebratory fireworks" started.

Both times I was on my way to baseball games.
Got lost on the way to Shea Stadium with some other college guys from New Jersey. They were too afraid to ask for directions. I didn't know any better, but they seemed to think we were in danger.
Got lost on the way to Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Ended up in a neighborhood straight out of Homicide or The Wire. Literally saw a guy standing over a non-responsive body, going through the body's pockets.

My GPS once took me through Hollygrove around 2am. So, yes.
I've also rode in a car that broke down in the same ward as hollygrove (17th I think) and that was interesting.

This wasn't really a time where I didn't feel safe, but I thought it was kind of funny.
2nd subway ride in NYC, and we get on an Express Orange Line at 125th street to go Downtown. However, we got on at the wrong platform and ended up on the express to Harlem. I knew the second we got on that train that we were in the wrong place.
Luckily the train had a stop at 145th street before traveling across the river. I quietly told my wife (no pics) that this was our stop. Got off, went up and over to the correct platform and got on the right train.
Again, nothing happened, but you could tell that we were in the wrong place (and I am sure some of our fellow passengers were thinking the same). Of course, my wife was oblivious until I told her when we were on the correct train.

As stated I think it's how you carry yourself. I've done some pretty stupid shite but it never really had an consequences. I have been going to Nola my whole life. About two years ago I was on bourbon. Feelin pretty tight. I decide to walk back to the hotel room I had at the Renaissance. Don't know how. But I ended up walking back toward the super dome. I am by no means saying the cbd is a shitty place. Between one and four it can be sketchy. I was struggling to walk. Was approached two different times by groups of black kids. I speak brother fluently. I talked my way out of that shite real quick. Being from Kenner and having family from chalmette has its benefits.
Fast forward to here in thibodaux. I used to work with this dumbass who went on a wildgoose chase for some adderal. Ended up in johnson ridge with a gun in his face. All how you carry yourself.

Stopped at a Lakota reservation somewhere near Little Bighorn on the Wyoming/Montana border. I've been all over the U.S. and in the worst parts of a lot of these cities mentioned so far, and I have never seen poverty and despair quite like that. Got mean-mugged the whole way and got the hell out of there.
Living out West for a while gives you an awareness about some of those reservations. They are some rough places.
My uncle took me to some small hamlet in Pike County, KY right on top of a mountain on the WV/KY border. I can't remember the name of the place, but it was about 500 people. Dirt roads, marijuana growing on porches, etc. They did not take kindly to us being there.
Got lost trying to park when visiting U of Chicago a few years ago. Hyde Park itself is super, super nice (the President lives there), but everything on all sides of it is horrible...some of the most violent and impoverished zip codes in America.

I did something kinda similar. I had got my girlfriend a gag gift from Tiffany's and they have this distinctive bag they give you, then I got on the wrong Subway and didn't realize until I got to the middle of Queens, when I got out and was waiting for the Subway back to Manhattan my bag was getting a lot of stares. Little did they know it only contained a $55 keychain.
(I was too OT poor to afford anything by the keychain or the coffee mug, lol)

I live in a predominantly white neighborhood in Pearland, TX. I usually drive to my mailbox up the next block and I never walk my dog after the sun goes down. I'd hate for my neighbors' irrational fear instinct to shine through and I get hit up for looking "suspect."
