In New Orleans a couple of times. After the UCLA vs Arkansas Cotton Bowl in the late 80's. Made a wrong turn leaving the fair grounds

Algiers Apartment Complex To Evict Tenants

NEW ORLEANS —An Algiers apartment complex is shutting down, and tenants say they were shocked to learn they have one month to move.

The landlord blames vandalism and theft for the closure, but one city leader says the tenants are the real victims.

Michele Thomason is a working mother expecting her fifth child in about a week. But when it comes to the apartment she lives in, she said she was shocked to learn she only has a month left.

"I'm scared. I don't want my kids to be out on the streets," Thomason said. "I don't have any family. I don't have anywhere to go."

Thomason and dozens of tenants at the Crescent City Gates apartments received a notice last week that the complex will shut at the end of February.

The notice refers to continuous property vandalism and theft. It goes on to say property maintenance has "overburdened rent collections."

But New Orleans City Council Member Kristin Palmer says the problems there go far deeper.

"It's slum property, quite frankly, and I feel really bad that the residents have been victimized by a slumlord that has consistently keep the property in substandard conditions," Palmer said.

WDSU cameras were rolling as workers came to shut off the water to the property. The landlord has not paid the bills in a while, according to councilmembers.

"He had over $200,000 in back water bills. He had over $500,000 in back taxes to the city of New Orleans and $10,000 in liens on the property from code enforcement," Palmer said.

Still, the February closure date is short notice for people on a fixed income who have few options at best.

"What is it that we can do? What's going to happen with us?" asked resident Nicole Sanders. "A lot of us are going to be homeless. A lot of us are going to be on the street. I know for sure that I will be on the street. I know I am because I have nowhere to go."

Palmer says she has been working with the city and different housing agencies to find help, but the clock is ticking.

She also says she has contacted the District Attorney's Office and Southern Legal Services about the matter.

The landlord of the property has yet to return WDSU's phone calls.

My grandfather told me a story about when he went to New York on a business trip. He and another guy decided to go for a walk and talk business. They didn't pay much attention to where they were going.

After a while an old black man walked up to them, and said "Good evening gentlemen. You're not from New York are you? I suggest for your own well being that you turn around and walk back the way you came as fast as you can." About that time, they realized they were big time in the ghetto. They said "Yes sir. Thank you sir," and hauled arse.

Cleveland, Ohio - leaving an Indians game with a buddy...realized we parked in a garage too far away when the crowd we left amongst was down to just us 2. We arrived early and downtown was still awake so we had no idea what we were in for that night.

Hayward, CA - stayed in a hotel here after an A's game in Oakland this summer. That town was pure trash.

NOLA - several times, most of them during Mardi Gras so drunkenness helped the nerves a bit. The worst was a time leaving a parade where we watched south of I-10 near Cleo Street.

Atlanta - realized downtown wasn't the area to party at a bar after '07 SECCG. Those places weren't for 'me.'

I've driven through parts of St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Memphis that I'm sure were rough, but it was during the day. I enjoy exploring cities on vacations, and often encounter some shitty looking places, but I wouldn't dare do it after dark.

I drove through some ghetto part of NOLA pre-Katrina at like 2am coming back from a friend's house. Turned down a street that was completely dark except for one street light. Knew I was in a bad area when I saw a house with it's porch completely enclosed (top to bottom) in burglar bar gating and 3 dudes in undershirts congregating under a street lamp and looking at me with a "WTF?" look on their faces.

Then there was the time I went to pick up a drunk buddy of mine from a poker game in the lower 9th (also pre-k). I walk into the most ghetto-ist house I have ever been in. The place reeked of weed and cigs, there was a baby just wearing a diaper and lying on the living room floor unattended and there were roaches EVERYWHERE (the floor, the walls, the counter tops). It makes me sick just thinking about it. Needless to say I got my friend (the only white guy) and GTFO of there. The people were nice enough, but that house was disgusting.
