Ever Been Scammed Or Know Someone Who Has?

I was just watching American Greed. While I don't understand how some of these people fall for some of these scams, I guess some people are just that good. They make their targets feel good about themselves, injects confidence in them which makes them more likely to take risk.
A relative of mine was an investor in that Stanford group (there is actually some money being recovered from that, not nearly what people invested, but its something).
A cousin of mine, in the early 2000 got scammed by some dude who said he was contracted by Direct TV to install satellites. The dude placed ads and people would contact him for a job, he would tell them they have to pay $200 for their tools
That cousin has always been kind of gullible and he fell right into that one.
Anyone else got some scam stories?

Been scammed by a contractor. Went cheap. Lots of signs. Learned a hard lesson.

Always go with the middle bid. But frick "contractors" who scam people. They are some of the worst. But if possible, always hire someone who has done work for someone you know (unless they scammed that person of course).

Do the lies those recruiters tell 18 year kids to get them to sign up count? If so I have met 1000's who got scammed during my time as a Drill Sergeant.
The foolishness they claimed the recruiter told them was so far fetched most of the stories were likely true.

I had a good friend who was scammed.
In hindsight, I'm surprised it happened, but the scammer did his homework.
I don't really know the whole story, but my friend was scammed out of a couple thousand dollars. I'm not sure if the scammer was pretending to be his grandson, or just a friend of a grandson. But my friend says the scammer knew information that only his grandson would've known. So the money was wired.
The grandson has always sworn he didn't know anything about it, nor knew the scammer.
