I love how all the baws on here that live in Ville Platte or Opelousas say how shitty the Bay Area is. “Yeah they make 300k a year but it costs 200k just in cost of living” that’s completely ridiculous

You should check out there cost of living if you want to know their true standard of living. Many of us here are living better than they they are with a lot less income.

Cut those salaries in half and take benefits away and replace tech job titles with "plant operator" and you have the typical posts on here you see about once a week

There is a reason you can buy a mansion in states like LA, AL, MS, AR, etc. for the price of a 1000SQft house in many areas of California, there is much more that makes up the standard of living than just price per square foot of housing. The weather alone in California is worth what it cost to live there.

Those are like $35,000 in BR though
Wrong
The housing is much more expensive but not everything else is scaled upward
If you make 185K a year you can find a decent apartment in the area and still have a ton of disposable income

Someone I know was on a team that was based in Chicago that the company wanted to move to Connecticut. The company said they would give raises. This person probably made 130k. The manager of said team did the math for everyone on the team and said the average team member would have to make double to live in Connecticut for the same standard of living.
It ain’t just California

That’s what? At least $10k/month after taxes and insurance?
Even if you’re paying $5000/month for an apartment, that leaves $5000/month for bills, savings, and fun. That’s a pretty good life no matter where you are.

Don’t those guys do shiploads of blow to stay focused at work? Gotta factor that in to cost of living.

You have to realize that these engineers are not the run of the mill plant/pipeline mechanical engineer from Louisiana or Texas. These are software engineers or other types of engineers who know programming. The best of the best.
If I were single, I would do it in a heartbeat, mainly for the bonus/stock options.

I ran a simulation on 200K a year in CA with maxing out a 401K (9%)
Your weekly paycheck would look like this
Weekly Gross Pay $3,557.69
Federal Withholding $763.57
Social Security $220.58
Medicare $51.59
California $299.70
SDI $35.58
401K $355.77
Net Pay $1,830.90
4.33 weeks in a month but let's just round it down to 4
Over 7200 a month take home while maxing out a 401K plan.
You could easily put a budget together for a 3K rental and have plenty of room for the rest of your bills, savings, and entertainment with the remaining 4K a month
And the last 3 months of the year or so you won't be paying anymore FICA taxes so add 800 a month extra there to throw in the bank

W/ the salary in the OP, and if someone is young, right out of school, you may be better off buying a tricked out RV (class c) or so and just bring your house to the office each day. Would be better than spending half a mill on about the same square footage.

Is that why the exact same old RV’s parked on El Camino Real near Stanford are there every time I pass by?
