It's all relative. I've been offered 300k jobs for what I do in the Bay area. And after doing the math, I'd take a quality of life/cost of living cut compared to what I'm making here in Cola.

Not at all, those are the main metro areas that drive up pricing though, more so San Fran. So even in the suburbs that far out it's still significant.

I feel bad for people who are mad at others who are more successful than they are.

The title was a dig at the people on the OT who constantly hate on California. I live in the Bay Area and have always defended it. I know the sacrifices I have had to make to live here, but if you want to work on the most cutting edge technologies and in some of the best companies in the world, there is no option but to move here.

The 8 months experience complaining about $185k does sound ridiculous imo. I guess it's relative to cost of living but still. Fwiw those salaries are much higher than southern California salaries

Here's a back yard of a $1.5MM house in SF that I randomly pulled up on zillow

Yeah, they can keep their $200-300k

Base salaries are on par or slightly low for oil field engineering managers, but those cash/stock offers are way more than LA/TX.

I am happy for people who succeed in life--not jealous. That being said I do feel sorry for anyone that has to live in Cali and pay so much money for everything.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned in business is that people are cheap. These are highly successful companies because they get the best employees by overpaying for them. In the grand scheme of profits, it’s pennies.

Companies that nickel and dime their employees typically are always struggling to survive. Over pay for people. It’s not a big expense. I just hired a stud engineer by offering him around $20k more than the going rate. In the grand scheme of things, what’s 20k?

You hate California because you’re jealous you don’t make 3 digits? Sad!

For one, working at Facebook or google isn’t an 8 to 5 job. They make those campuses awesome so you’ll spend a lot of time there. Factor in a commute and you are spending a shite ton of time there.

Secondly, you may laugh at the guy out of college, but if other companies are paying new hires more, then that’s what his current earning potential is. It makes sense to optimize your salary rather than say “I get paid enough already”.

For a few grand you can turn that empty lot back of your house into a garden and a patio. But you knew that.
If it was set up like the grand house in Vicky Barcelona, it would go for 1.7m

I'm just surprised companies are willing to pay so much for labor costs, just to be located in the Bay area.

Despite the ridiculous housing costs and general cost of living, the Bay Area has a lot going for it - the best startup ecosystem (accelerators, incubators etc.), the top Venture Capital firms (Sand Hill road), the best tech companies (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google, Uber, Lyft, Salesforce, Intel, Cisco etc.) and two of the top universities (Stanford and UC Berkeley) - all situated within a 40-mile radius. It is a perfect self fulfilling circle of top-quality education, access to smart talent and companies that are not afraid to pay whatever it takes to attract and retain the best people and make them work on the latest and greatest technologies.

One thing I will never understand. Top level guys making zillions when the laborers make shite pay, leading to a lower talent level, lower morale and higher turnover. All of which cost the company big money.

I know a guy in the home healthcare industry who is makes a ton of money, but is cheap af. Like losing his fricking mind from stress when CMS or some insurance company checks up on them but I guess he'd rather lose sleep every night versus taking a small paycut and actually hire the right people for the job. I'm sure he'll be glad to have saved that money when CMS hits hit with a 6 figure fine and he loses all his contracts because he was too cheap to staff his operation adequately.

Why stress when you don't have to? Life is short.

Other than housing, it's not that bad. Not nearly on the level some people think.

I only worked 6 months last year in San Jose and still made $125k, and I don't live like a pauper. Far from it. Granted, I have no intention of buying a home there, but if you have a little bit of common sense, it's not hard to get by at all.

In the units where I rent the condo I stay in, there's a 500 sq ft, one bedroom unit for sale for $495k. That's insane when you think the the place I rent, a 1100 sq ft two bedroom unit, was bought for $565k in 2015.

The stupidity of this thread.

Do you have any idea what it costs to live in SF?

Working for Facebook, they'll probably live in the valley, not in San Francisco. It's a lot cheaper there, relatively, on a day to day basis.
