I'm almost finished watching the God Family Football documentary on Prime Video. The Eagles have to win their last two to get into the 2022 playoffs. Solid show. Seems like a genuinely good group of people.

There's not much historical perspective or backstory however - just that the school was founded in 1980 and the football team has won 14 state championships and the coach and headmaster is Pastor Denny.

Pastor Denny said that 60 percent of the students are on financial aid, so where does all of that money come from? Has the school built up some sort of large trust? Also, to what extent has the football program actively recruited over the years, and how many other programs and coaches has Evangel Christian pissed off over the yers.

Local businesses, donors, and the other 40% of families.

They were getting parents manufacturing and oilfield jobs at one point.

A lot. Then there was a rift between administration so some split off and formed Calvary Baptist using the same blueprint.

Played against Evangel in the 90’s and it was like playing a juco team.

There’s a recent thread on the MSB with a lot of backstory. Their run started in the early 90s. In addition to the above mentioned recruiting, they were one of the only schools running a pass-heavy shotgun offense at the time.

The show is some serious ebony and ivory living together in harmony porn.

I imagine someone from Europe or wherever watching the show and being really confused about all the white people and black people getting along so well. It seems genuine too. Good for them!

Josh Booty put Evangel on the map. He was the number one recruit in football and baseball. After him, it made it easier for them to get premier players. It snowballed from there. People hate on Pastor Denny and I get it. But he had done a lot of good for the community. Especially on the west side of Shreveport which has become dilapidated. He has stayed the course on that side of town.

They were bringing players in from all over the area in their heyday. It was John Curtis north at one point.

West Shreveport used to be decent working class and middle class neighborhoods (not really a rich part of town). Now it’s going down the drain.

Same could be said about a number of Shreveport areas.

Not really when you watch a man roll up to your MIL estate that’s on 100 acres and proceeds to tell her that god spoke to both he and his wife in their dreams and said this lady was hurting and that god wanted her to give them the house and the land to soothe the pain of losing her husband 10 years prior.. he’s fricking scum

Played the whole part…. Brought the wife and kids and let the kids run around the grounds spinning his tale of how much joy this would bring her knowing that kids were happy there

If the LA Gator Voucher program ends up being funded, schools like Evangel are going to see huge growth

They were a football powerhouse that played up in classification and often dominated, which didn’t sit well with some other schools.

Is that a good thing, though? Is that side of town still going downhill?

It might be hard for them to move the school at this point.

FIFY
Actual school would probably be pretty easy to move if I had to guess, think it’s T-buildings.
