Well it is racist.
Technically, it is, but it's not demeaning. I don't understand how it's a negative stereotype to say that black people love fried chicken. Fried chicken is fricking delicious. Who doesn't love fried chicken, especially the Popeye's shown?! Is it because it's considered "peasant food" like most soul food is?
"Black QB's can't play in the NFL because they aren't smart enough to pick up the playbook."
Now that's racist and demeaning in a negative way. I will never understand how saying that a certain race of people liking a certain type of food is a negative and demeaning statement.
"Those frickin Italians, I tell ya, they sure do love their spaghetti with meatballs!"

Has Bishop Deshotel apologized for the PEDOPHILIA among the Catholic hierarchy?? Who do these Catholic Priests think they are? Check the plank in your eye Bishop.

Actually, technically it's not racist. There is no negative connotation to liking fried chicken. It's stereotyping, but it's not racist.

Is this no longer ok? I remember lines out the door at every fried chicken place in BR every MLKJr Day when I lived there, and it definitely wasn't just white people. It's a tongue-in-cheek tradition that a lot of people in the south participate in. It's not really meant to be a mocking gesture, more of a "trying too hard to be light-hearted" homage. Not every celebration of the work of a pivotal figure for human rights who was gunned down before his time has to be somber. Why not let people have a little fun with it celebrating the fruits of what he worked for: people of all races, colors, and creeds being able to break bread together as friends and family.

While I completely agree with you, as evidenced by this very thread existing, doesn't it lead one to believe that it's racist? This story is about some chickenshit bishop forcing kids to apologize because it's "racist". If there is no negative connotation then there is no "outrage" and therefore should be no story.
Im not disagreeing with you. Just poking holes in how absurd this idea is. I agree, who doesnt love fried chicken?

I think a lot of people in situations like his aren't really offended, and don't really want to punish students, but it's not worth the shite storm that the media will bring to your front door if just brush it off.
At this point, the media isn't just an outlet for information, but rather an angry mob that will attempt to take down anyone or anything that it opposes.

For the record, I don’t really think acknowledging that black people love fried chicken ( who doesn’t) demeans anybody. But to use MLK day as a teen- style provocation is going to evoke a predictable response. Maybe eat some chicken, talk about how peeps should be proper brothers and sisters and post the pic without the MLK tie in.
The worst person in the story is the sanctimonious Bishop by the way. Just another cowardly bureaucrat. I’d rather get my moral instruction from the restaurant deep- fry cook.

Observation seems to indicate that what it opposes are white people who aren't Communist.

Why did they go to Popeyes? Should have went to Fat Albert's on the North Side... That is where the best fried chicken is at.

I wonder what the Bishop would think is worse:
Celebrating MLK JR Day with a) eating fried chicken as a stereotype or b) with commitng adultry...which would be more of an accurate MLK Jr way of celebrating.

My Grandmother told me when she was young that chicken for Sunday dinner was a treat. They could not eat all the chickens because they would have had no more eggs. Chicken then was not efficiently or mass produced. I don’t know how it got connected to black folks.

The word "racist" has lost all it's meaning b/c the clowns who continually use it don't actually know what it means.

I think what happened is that people used to complain about things that they didn't like, and others didn't give a shite about it. So, in order to draw attention to things they don't like and grab attention they started labeling things as racist, sexist, misogynistic, etc...
