I have a friend I have known for close to 20 years who stutters pretty bad. He’s a great guy. Successful, owns his own business. Christians guy who does outreach with the hearing impaired from learning sign language from an early age due to his impediment. I have never known if when he gets stuck on a word and starts to stammer if I should just say the word knowing what he is trying to say. It’s difficult and comfortable seeing him twitch and stammer on a word when I know what he is trying to say but I’ve always felt it inappropriate to just say the word for him. Curious if anyone here has dealt with this.

You’ve known him for 20yrs...

Why wouldn’t you just ask him if it’s ok to help him?

Don’t say anything. Just let him finish it when he can.

Also, if you’ve known him for 20 years and is a friend, you could always talk to him about it. It’s not like he doesn’t know he does it

You've been his friend for 20 years. I would just ask him what the etiquette is.

Our company was visited by a higher up from an Asian oil company and his translators. His stutter was a hang up with the "D" sound. Everyone just sat there and assumed some of the words had a minute of d's in them.

What if you stutter when trying to say the word for him. How awkward would that be, two guys stuttering at each other.

Go watch The King's Speech. Don't do what Prince Albert's pops did.
