And, he was giving the money to a different guy, who claimed to be in the middle purely out of the goodness of his own heart.

Man I had this happen but I was using illegals. One left I hired the helper to take over. He totally screwed up the tile job. I fired him and he poured grout down my drain.
I just finished the job with some friends.

You’re building a house on a handshake deal?

They’re contractors. Agree on and execute a contract. It would (should) cover responsibility for this exact default scenario.

I subcontracted the house build myself. The person doing this portion of house was supposed to be paying another person to do the job. That person was not getting paid what he was promised so he was quitting. I learned today that everything I paid the contact person wasn’t paying the guy doing the job what was agreed upon so the contact person tried to get more money so he wouldn’t have to lose what he made.

ok that makes more sense. We assumed when you said contractor it was a general not a sub.

On what basis? There is no contract so he cannot claim breach of contract.

I have no problem with the guy doing the work, he is a professional. The problem is the guy who hired him wasn’t paying the worker so he was quitting. I told him I would pay him directly if he finished the job.

Your usual posts are dumb as hell and come off as trolling, but this thread makes me think you may be an actual water head. Please don’t reproduce

there is no issue with this since there is no contract. You are just paying twice. Lesson learned and nothing is messed up at your house. hopefully.

Yeah I saw that once I scrolled down a bit .

This is why if you're going to sub out the work and act as your own GC you better have your ducks in a row.

Or, just sign a contract with a GC and this is a lot easier to deal with.

Bottom line…

Contractor A told you “I’ll build your house for X”.

Contractor A told you “contractor B is actually building your house but I’m paying him 100% of the funds you’re giving me”.

Contractor B told you “Contractor A isn’t paying me 100% of the money you’re giving him and I’m not working for less”.

Contractor A told you “I need more money from you because I can’t take some of the money off of the top of what you’re paying me to build your house and still pay contractor B”.

My question is, why are you paying Contractor A at all?

No nothing is messed up. I just thought that a person doing a job should be honest. When I gave extra money I figured that would be it and worker knew about it. Instead that info was kept from him and contact was trying to squeeze more money out of me. Still paying same just not going through middle man.

This is what you get for not hiring stout.

Because I didn’t have anyone else for this portion of the job. The person originally doing this portion told this contractor what was agreed upon and he agreed on job. Wasn’t until after that I was hassled for more money or worker who did all the work was leaving. Just paying him and done.
