ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro announced to staffers that roughly 300 people will be laid off as parent company Disney shifts to more direct-to-consumer streaming. The memo follows internal discussions about layoffs related to Covid-19.
ESPN will also part ways with some on-air talent once contracts expire.
“As you know, we value transparency in our internal dialogue, and that means in both good and challenging times,” Pitaro wrote in the memo. “After much consideration, I have some difficult organizational decisions to share. We will be reducing our workforce, impacting approximately 300 valued team members, in addition to 200 open positions.
The network employs roughly 6,000 people worldwide.

Unfortunately it isn't going to be the idiots that are causing people to tune away. They are going to lay off the low people on the totem pole that are just trying to make a living.

It's a shell of what it was in its glory days.

I hope they remember to include diversity in their business plan by laying off all white people first, especially herbstreet

The woke thing is true, but it is also true that ESPN has refused to evolve with streaming. One has to get a Faux Cable app like Sling in order to view games/programming. And ESPN+ is garbage, at least as far as live events go.
My solution? I get Sling for 4 months (5 if Tigers are in playoffs) and get rid of it after college football season is over. Way dem tigers looking this season, I'll be cancelling it in about 5 weeks.
One would think that along with their millenial woke attitude, ESPN might realize that cable is dying with the boomers.

200 open positions
Gotta love corporate america.
Get fired for being loyal, & good at your job, earning raises through the years.
They are gonna hire 200 people who make half the money to do 300 people's jobs, who will then leave once the economy allows them to leverage all the experience they gained, and their open positions will be filled by experienced, expensive people who will be seen as a burden later.
Classic Corporate cannibalization of the workforce. Wanna know how wages stay the same yet companies make more and more?
This is it.

I could be misreading it, but I interpreted it as them doing away with those open positions along with the 300 active employees.
When there is a restructuring the open positions are often the ones that go first.
But you are correct that the remaining employees will have to pick up the duties of the released staff, usually for little or no more $.

Can they rehire Jemele Hill so they can fire her again??

The sentence is ambiguous. They are laying off 300 in addition to closing 200 open positions as I read it.

No surprise there. They stopped reporting on every sport except the Oppression Olympics.
