I’m sitting in the ER waiting room as my dad is in a holding area with a brain bleed (ct done at local hospital and send to a bigger hospital). .

Lady on the side of me says she’s been here four hours —- no one here “looks emergent”. Why wouldn’t you go to a walk in clinic? I know you can’t judge a book by the cover but still wondering.

ER never crosses my mind except for bones sticking out, difficulty breathing or those type things.

Last time I was in the ER my hand was cut to ribbons and squirting blood a few feet if I made a fist, they told me to wrap it in the beach towl I was holding and sit down. I waited for over an hour to get stiches and told I needed surgery to reattach the tendons

Cause they don’t have to pay. And it’s Facebook/pity material.

Because they’d have to pay.

Welcome to the access of care discussion, and doubt it gets better. Government should have never got involved in Healthcare, they screw everything up, and will inadvertently kill millions...

you clearly underestimate the amount of people trying to extort narcotics from the health care system in this country

They go to the ER instead of walk in clinics so they don't have to pay

They will "charge" them but never pay it back

Emergency rooms suck. I'm not sure when they became after hours clinics for people with a sinus infection, but this is a large part of why insurance premiums are so high. Er's have to treat these folks and most likely the people using the place in that manner have no insurance and no plans on paying the bill.

The law should allow the hospital to deny treatment if it is not a true emergency IMO. But, I know that will never happen because some nurse doesn't want to treat some dude not feeling well and he dies driving home from a heart attack.

To people that know they won't have a bill, to them the ER seems like a logical solution to most problems because they have no financial obligation to the cost.

That's why Medicaid costs are so inflated. WIth no out of pocket expenses for the insured, they have a sore throat, well better go to the ER.

It's amazing that something as simple as a few stitches can take four hours with an empty ER

Id go to say that 80% of the people that go to the ER are bullshite. The other 20% are either admitted or discharged w actual injuries that need follow up care, ortho injuries and such.

People also go to emergency rooms because they are plain fricking stupid. Stupid. They can’t comprehend the difference between an after hours care and an emergency room. Both are open, both give medical care what’s the difference. I am pissed off at stupid people today.

SOOOO many kids end up coming from the ER for Motrin/ Tylenol for a fever and that's it... something they could've easily bought over the counter, yet the moms will wait for hours in the ER for an Rx for it so it can be billed on Medicaid... fo' free
