I would add this has ZERO to do with racism other than the author of the article race baiting.
A more appropriate way to deal with this is to explain with a clear calm voice that you are very concerned about the patient's welfare and understand anxiety, cataplexy, chronic pain, dyspnea at rest, and whatever his other made up symptoms were could result in serious outcomes if not properly managed. As a result order the removal visitors from the room as they are causing increased anxiety, order no TV or electronics as they have been shown to increase agitation, make pt NPO to prevent aspiration as he can not even sit up, check basic labs, then additional labs including an ABG in a step wise fashion only after results come in and you rule out the process you were testing for, order a foley catheter to preserve pt dignity since he can not even sit up to urinate, treat pain with Toradol IM, Tylenol PR, and wait for the pt to make the physical and verbal declaration that he is well enough to get out of bed or refuse the excellent care he is receiving.

I had the SAME exact experience with an ER staff one time.
I went in because I thought I was having a heart attack. I was chilling on the couch one night watching TV and all of a sudden my heart rate jumped to about 150. My heart was murmoring, and I had bad chest pains. So, I rushed myself to ER. After testing, it turns out it was anxiety. They gave me ativan and let me go.
A few days later it happened again, so I went back. This time they weren't as nice. I heard one of the nurses say "Yeah this dude is just drug seeking." I told one of them that if I had to live with this all the time, I might just off myself. One of the nurses went out in the hall and said to another nurse (pretty loudly) "I'll go get a gun for this guy."
100% true story, no exaggeration. I thought about suing at the time, but never went through with it. I was fricking pissed and almost punched the nurse (it was a male nurse). I didn't want to go to jail, though and didn't want to be put in the psych ward (Actually I told them that if I need the psych ward to get well, please put me there, because I can't handle this shite every day all day).
IMO, if you are an uncaring POS like that, don't be a nurse. For frick's sake. There are people out there with REAL mental health issues (anxiety is one). Sadly, our medical professionals receive zero training in the mental health field. They treat everyone with mental health issues like they are just some drug addict POS.
(I've never done drugs outside of weed in college and don't even drink. So "drug seeking" has never been my problem).

. This is what I'm talking about. High quality, medically appropriate, ethical care. Might clarify the Tylenol PR means PER RECTUM for those not fluent in medical abbreviations. Faster absorption and quicker pain relief than by mouth as well. His symptoms could also be from hypoglycemia. Some finger stick blood sugars wouldn't hurt. Posted on 6/18/18 at 4:44 pm to Will Cover

It's better than it was, but definitely still a long ways to go. Burnout and fatigue are real. In the ER especially. There's not enough help go around and that part is getting worse it seems. But you have to be careful and not say that stuff around patients. It would be ideal to not say it at all, but that's not going to happen. People get frustrated, especially when you do have difficult patients. Sucks you had to experience that.

I've had a few. The guy in that video was not in the middle of having one. He was completely fine at that point.
He's articulate and calm, even being sarcastic. He told his dad to film before she walked in because he could sense she was annoyed with him.
The doctor handled it wrong, but that would annoy the shite out of me too if I had real patients to take care of.

I used to get panic attacks and can empathize with you. When people hear panic attack, they think "oh he was just freaking out about a bunch of things on his mind, he's just a pussy". But it's not that at all. It's much more than that. It's like you described, you really do think you're going to die and your heart feels like it's about to jump out your chest. And they will hit you wherever. I've had them hit me in the middle of dinner with friends, taking finals in school, a middle of an LSU football game sitting in Tiger Stadium, etc. And the thing is, once you start getting them you will freak out even more when you get them which feeds the intensity and starts a vicious circle. A self-fulfilling prophecy, if you will.
Mine have gone away over the years, with the help of therapy, medication, meditation, etc. Thank God!

Because it's not related to the activity you're presently doing. It's more of a collaboration of everything going on in your life, and fueled by chemical imbalance anxiety.

This. Except for E. Her bedside manner was shite and she could have handled it a lot better.
She should have been required to undergo bedside manner training but not fired. Tired of every mistake or minor transgression being blown up by the Twitter/blogosphere where someone loses their career or reputation or whatever. Lighten the F up everyone.
