My 11-month son has had 3 ear infections since birth, 2 within the last 2 months. He was on amoxicillin in early Feb, then omnicef, and now azithromycin. Had a consult with the ENT yesterday, and we agreed on myringotomy with tympanostomy tubes. He asked if he snored, and he doesn't, but he does breathe heavy at times during his sleep. After that response, he said we should probably remove his adenoid at this time. My question to any ENT or ped docs...is it necessary, especially at this age? Just can't imagine having my son intubated for an adenoidectomy that may have no real benefit. Others whose children had adenoidectomies please chime in.

If you want a second opinion, ask another physician. Not a damn message board.

I suggest speaking with another physician if you're not sure.

But in my expirience, my daughter was a year and a half when she had her tonsils and adenoids taken out. The difference in her quality of sleep and overall health was like night and day.

Get a 2nd opinion. Probably just needs TM tubes.

Heavy breathing “sometimes” at night doesn’t mean anything.

Yo Scruffy. Shouldn’t they stop with the carousel of antibiotics?
Would there be anything left to give/take?

Nah. You don’t want to give them the same one every time. That’s when they start getting immune.

You should’ve come to the OT first instead of wasting time with that dumb doctor

Minimize the exposure of your child to anesthesia. While links to learning disabilities, etc from multiple exposures to anesthesia under age 3 are weak, I’d still err on the side of caution. What I mean is get it all done at once rather than multiple exposures/separate surgeries.

It takes the Dr and extra 2 minutes, doesn’t cost any extra, and helps with the reoccurrence of ear infections. My daughter has had 3 sets of tubes. I should’ve asked to have the adenoids removed with the first set.

The extra anesthesia costs extra.

The surgery will cost extra.

You will incur an additional facility charge as well.

Our little girl just had tubes and adenoids taken out about a month ago. She’s almost a year and a half. Cost us $280 after deductible and worth every penny. Poor thing had ear infections every other month and we couldn’t keep giving her antibiotics without posing a risk to her health. Sleeps great but she’s always slept well. Procedure takes probably less than an hour. The first 2-3 days after she was irritable but couldn’t be happier now. If you’re hesitant, get another opinion but you were referred to a specialist for a reason.

Vert Benign surgery but some people die from it each year. I wouldn't at 11 months. But the ENT's Hatteras ain't going to pay for itself. But what do I know? I'm Just A fricking E R Doctor

Intubated?

Adenoidectomy is outpatient and usually done in about 30 minutes. I don't think they intubate for adenoid removal.

Use webmd and check out a few YouTube videos. Tube surgery is like putting a straw in a juice box. You got this.

Mine had his at the same age and it cost us $35,000.

Two ears = two surgical charges, two anesthesia charges, two facility charges.

I thought this was a scam after I got the bill and called the insurance company to rat them out, and the insurance company said this is correct, and common.

Even though it was one 30min procedure, with one doctor, in one room, with one dose of nitrous oxide...

...it is customary to double bill because it is two ears.

I couldn't believe it.

To make matters worse, the Dr was covered by insurance as in-network...

But the facility and anesthesiologist were not!

Ha!

Just a student, NOT a Dr., but have scrubbed in for a number of Tubes + Adenoids procedures (which im fairly certain is what you are referring to).

Its a very, very simple and common procedure and if my experience with the Doc in BR i scrubbed in with is worth anything, I was amazed at how quickly/efficiently it was done. This of course will vary depending on your doctor and specific conditions of the patient, but shouldnt be significantly.

As to the necessity of it, I cannot say because 1) I do not have my MD, and 2) I dont know the specifics of your child in particular.

My advice is just listen to your Doctor. DO educate yourself on the topic of course and Dont be afraid to ask questions if you have them. Its also their job to make sure you are understanding of and comfortable as possible with why/what they are doing
