American "poor" people in 2025 live better than the wealthiest humans in history did, pre-WWII.

If the "rich get richer, but the poor also get reasonably rich", you're against that, right?

You're okay with the poor remaining poor as long as the rich also get poorer? Check.

I didn't say any of that. You might want to sign up for a creative writing class it seems to be your forte.

I hate how the modern left seems to no longer have any interest in or want to engage in any discussion of the general human condition (which is what has always fueled the teaching of English/Literature).

It’s now all just trite vapid boring discourse on every trite vapid concocted cause of the day. It’s all just become so terribly dull.

This is great. With 228,000,000 adults that indicates that 12% are millionaires. When you look at the third world like the UK its about 4.5%.

Just under 10% of Americans being millionaires is "a few people"? Sounds like a major success

What school sent out this assignment? Teacher should be removed from the classroom immediately if you are in a conservative district. That’s a communist writing prompt and the premise is totally flawed.

How is this a problematic question? It seems open to either side of the aisle using facts from real life.

The number of millionaires and billionaires are growing in the United States. Wages have remained fairly stagnant with the lower and middle class. Inflation has been an issue for five years now.

Knowing that, do you think it's right for people to earn as much money as possible?

That seems like someone can argue for the benefits of a capitalist who can "trickle down," invest in communities, and spark new business ventures for the good of the economy.

Or it can open the door to discussing the hoarding of wealth and the consequences for people.

Would you rather the English teacher teach them one particular stance either way?

America is a ladder that’s available to anyone to climb. It is a personal choice to pick what level is high enough for you.

Start climbing.

Plenty of other countries don’t have a ladder so their people plot and scheme to get here for our ladder.

No one is plotting and scheming to get to Venezuela.

A statewide virtual charter school (south carolina)

Funnier still, he's also taking a mandatory personal finance course that uses material from frikkin Pochantas Elizabeth Warren... they are teaching kids the 50-30-20 rule, where 50% of earnings go to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to savings. Wtf?

As a general rule, no. Wealth is not finite. His/her wealth does not affect mine.

Now if that individual develops god complex, which some seem to do. Examples: Bill Gates, Soros, etc. Then they are nothing more than Bond villians and should be stripped of everything. Slippery slope, I know. I don't really care. One wants to destroy financial systems and the other wants depopulation and blotting out the sun.

The irony. I would just help my child think critically about the assignment rather than terminate a voice with which I disagree. If the question assumes a false premise, respond with a rejection of the premise and the promise of what the American dream is/should be.

Something like this

quote:

America is a ladder that’s available to anyone to climb. It is a personal choice to pick what level is high enough for you. Start climbing.

Right. Just take a stance and support the position. Could even argue the side disagreeing with just to build a skill to articulate another's argument. There's no problem as long as teacher is grading the thought process and not the position itself.

Even suggesting that someone else has "too much" of something is problematic. This question is good for debate, I guess... but it's also framed in a way that is biased towards class jealousy.

Most of the kids that have responded have done so in a class warfare kind of way.

If a person agrees that it's possible for someone to have too much wealth, the next step is figuring out what is to be done about it... bad path to go down, imo.
