So if cost of living goes down one year, the employees should expect a pay cut?

haha, you know what the answer to that will be.

And also cost of employee due to health care and tax increases? Should those be factored in as well?

I hate secularity based promotions more than anything.

It allows for people to just get promoted or get a better job just for continuing to breath.

An employee could be one of the most valuable employees on earth and run circles around everyone else but because 10 people were hired in front of that employee, the star employee with just sit there and waits.

The best thing an employee can do is not be interchangeable. If you work somewhere 10 years and the employer can still get someone off the street and replicate what you do in about 2 weeks then you can't expect any more than whatever the employer is generous enough to give you.

There is some value in knowing you for the employer, so you should get raises the first couple of years but if you don't do anything additional after that a 10 year employee is no more valuable than a 2 year employee.

Quite the opposite.
I know of lots of old, lazy baby boomers who think they should get everything on seniority.

Down vote away but I know lots of educated millennials that believe in working their tails off to get their promotion.

I've seen very few of these where I work. All they care about is networking and wanting to be the boss. Very few put in extra hours.

How is raised based on merit diminishing workers' rights? If I'm doing a better job, my raise should be better.

Sounds like some genius in the marketing dept created a fake Glassdoor account and dropped that nugget in. Wonder how many hard working high performers decided to send their resume in based on that single, FREE might I say, post on Glassdoor? Great job marketing dept

I work for an organization where promotion isn't based on either merit or seniority.

A few weeks back at a staff meeting they gave out service pins. Among those receiving 5 year pins were a "manager" and three supervisors, one of which was promoted to manager a week later.

As they got to 10 years or more group, the director who was passing them out stated - " these are the people you go to when you have a question or need help".

Someone whispered "yeah, cause the supervisors don't know anything". It brought a bit of laughter. The director didn't hear the comment but started laughing because others were.

My first job out of residency I was hired at one rate then was told the contract had to be rewritten bc two were being hired and one had been in the field 10 years already and the person who wrote the contracts made a mistake putting us both at the same rate. Within 6 months half his clients were asking for appointments with me and my schedule was so full I was staying later and he was leaving on time bc he had no one else on his schedule. I went and asked for a raise above what I knew he was making and was denied bc they said his seniority in the field set his pay. I had already written my separation notice in case it happened. And with a smile I handed it to them as soon as they denied my pay raise. They asked twice for me to stay and came up with some bs bonus structure which I refused.
