The biggest weakness with drones besides the obvious inability to carry large payloads. Is they are very vulnerable to directed energy.

Drone swarms have been around a long time now, and they generally communicate via RF which has become increasingly easier to interfere.

Between gps jamming and directed energy we will still need manned aircraft for air superiority.... For now

Autonomous drones can be pre-programmed with assigned course and action point execution commands.

Jamming likely would be ineffective. You’d have to find a way to harm the electrical components within the individual drones.

Very unlikely as most are gps guided, which is actually easier to jam than more modern tactical radios

Good call, I didn’t think about simple GPS spoofing, etc. Thanks for catching that!

F-35s are still necessary, but I have a feeling Elon is about to start making some crazy shite when it comes to drones.

It's funny when it comes to Elon people think he knows how to do everything.

I'm not shitting on his success, but it seems apparent to me he has stepped away from Tesla and space X to enjoy his days shite posting on the Internet.

I hope the USA has thought of how to defend if drones used for political assasinations.

I'd love a 8 limit a day drone season!

You obviously haven’t been following SpaceX lately.

DoD must be drooling over the idea of a Starship loaded with drones being sent anywhere in the world in a matter of hours.

I’m curious if an Aegis radar at max power could “cook” their electronics?

To echo the earlier poster, what would happen to an f-35 flying through that?

I’ve listened to a ton of podcasts on F-35 recently. Pilots, test pilots, navy and Air Force. Everyone loves to shite on the airplane, but it’s really hard to fathom just how advanced it is. And that’s just what they can tell us.

Point being, to answer your question, an F-35 won’t have to fly thru a drone swarm. It would be long gone before the bad guys had time to deploy them and most likely they wouldn’t even know the F-35s had been there.

I imagine one of the limitations of those drone swarms would be the altitude they can reach?

The military runs the GPS system. In case of a conflict they'd turn it off so the bad guys couldn't use it. They have their own system for military use.

The kind of drone systems that could be had if given the same budget as the F35 program is wild. However; unlike the F35, I don't think we should share our drone systems with allies the way the F35 program is. For a multitude of reasons.

I think we're better off if all of our allies comes up with their own solutions. Its a new field and we can do more faster by iterating and evolving across a huge range of factors. Speed, cost, duration, etc

The F35 program was putting the best of the best together to bring more than a century of airplane design to its pinnacle. So it made sense for the allies to share a piece of the development of the singular program. Shared maintenance systems, etc.

Who's to say there isn't a device that can take out half of those drones with one weapon

There is. Probably been around since the seventies on most Navy ships and pumps out what 1 to 3 million Watts

You can knock down a bunch of those with nothing but a microwave with the glass knocked out of it

Drone war is crazy and will be interesting to watch for the next 20 years. I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen more terrorist attacks using them here in the states. Seems like any time there's a large crowd of 100 people or more that they could be easy targets.

No offense, but why would any enemy attack us, other than the internet, when we are destroying ourselves.

Does anyone even think about why the terrorist attackers stopped? They are sitting back and laughing at us. If we fall we did it to ourselves.

How would you fight that, targeted EMP?

Yes, but first you’d have to find them. Same goes for the f-35, these are useless if you can’t see the aircraft on radar to guide them in.

The Air Force is already looking at airborne directed emp to counter the drone threat. It will be interesting how this plays out.
