Something can have meaning in more than one way. Your definition is one way. Another way is that by working, you are integrated with the society you live in. We know this is beneficial because people who can’t find work or chose not to often degenerate and suffer from diseases of despair.

Maybe I should have worded that better. My point if someone is playing the lottery and hoping to never work again, that might not be the solution to their particular problem with the work they’re doing.
EDIT: Btw, I know this because I’ve been that guy. We probably all have had a crap job that we hated and wished it would go away somehow, even a lotto winning pipe dream. But the only realistic solution to this is to find another job.

Exactly and I’m really not understanding how people are coming to any other conclusion.
They’re saying “everyone will have all their needs and wants provided for”. No we flipping won’t.
If AI is doing all productive work, we will get what they (the people who control the AI) decide to give us.
And that’s the very best outcome because it assumes that humans can actually control a truly generalized AI that is able to act in the world. If “they” can’t, I think the likely outcomes are grim.
There are so many “ifs” to bridge to even get remotely close to the utopia some people are convinced we’re heading.

If robots handle everything, how would the availability of resources change? Can robots not create and corral resources? Just because something is "free" doesn't mean you'll be allowed to have an infinite quantity of it.
Also, according to some in this thread, everyone will die young due to mental and physical deterioration from lack of fulfilling work. That should free up some resources.

There will always be human achievement. Athletics and music and art and stuff like that aren’t going anywhere.
