In the late seventies I decided to channel my inner Kelly Leak and I took my YZ-80 to school in the 4th grade at Brownfields elementary. No helmet, road thru the subdivision streets, cut across a bar room parking lot, crossed Plank road, road thru a dry ditch bed on a two lane road, cut across three yards, almost got hit by my own school bus when I tried to wave to all the kids hanging out the window screaming at me in the parking lot, and parked it on the sidewalk 6 feet from the front door of the school.

Granted, I got paddled by the asst principal before school even started, my dad beat my arse again that afternoon, my mom tried to sell it to the neighbors, and I got suspended from school for a day.

But I was a frickin legend. Get the kid the bike. The fast one.

If the bike can go 37 MPH, a 13 year old has no business riding it anywhere besides open country. They don’t even understand basic traffic laws at that age.

I was riding a motorcycle that went way faster than 37 at 9 years old. Was riding it in the neighborhood @ 12 and was riding in traffic @ 15.

So you’re saying that handicapped people are stupid????? ……..because I AM handicapped. I was asking an honest question. Yes, I am handicapped and I’m anything BUT stupid. Based on your reply, I guess you would have considered Stephen Hawking stupid?

I’ve seen a lot of discussion in The Woodlands area recently. There have been some really bad accidents, probably made worse by the walking path setups that cross over roads.

Needs to be addressed one way or another.

I'm sorry, you didn't identify yourself as being special when you started this interaction. And Stephen Hawking is dead, Timmy, and never did have much to say anyway.

I have ridden an E bike once and it was through the vineyards and along the quiet roads of Bordeaux, France.

I have a Tuttio and modded it to do over 50 mph. Fun little bike.
Can add batteries and controllers and make them fast.

You sound fun. You didn't have a dirt bike or a three wheeler or atv as a kid?

That bottom video proves that he's not old enough for that machine.
Weaving and leaning like that next to an active road? Recipe for disaster.

E-Bikes avoid a lot of road rules and restrictions because they are electric and not internal combustion. The law just hasn't caught up to the phenomenon. They "technically" don't need tags or registration because they are "toys" under the law. It will be sorted out soon, but there is a massive gray area right now.

Internal combustion’s irrelevant, they’re still motorized. Most circumvent motorcycle laws by either adding pedals or keeping them under 30mph out of the box.

So, my son came home today and told me that his baseball teammate broke his arm riding his e-bike. That’s the 3rd teammate in 2 seasons who’s broken something on an e-bike or electric scooter. He still wants one though because those other 3 boys “were doing stupid stuff” and he’s apparently the only 13 year old boy in history immune to peer pressure.

Nearly every kid in the neighborhood broke a bone or two on their BMX bike back in the 90s. Having a kid with a show up to class in 7th grade wearing a cast isn’t something new because e-bikes are a thing.
