So he wasn't sucking off Lee in his speech?

Also this board obsession with the Confederacy is weird. A bunch of traitors who got pissy because slavery was on it's way out and decided to flip the table and
leave.

Indeed... People of reasonable intelligence and good faith can recognize, respect and even honor the skills and character of others even when they disagree with their cause and/or choices given the circumstances they found themselves in..

The failure of southern education was allowing the Lost Cause Myth to be taught as fact.

You're the one with the bad education.

There wasn't really a difference in opinion. This was the predominant thought process of 99.9% of white men in the North and the South. Here is how Abraham Lincoln felt about blacks.

quote:

“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

I wasn't educated by any Southern education system. If I had to guess, I would say I have a far more extensive education in history and government than you do.

Lee didn’t want the war to happen and didn’t think succession was a good idea. He was stationed in Texas when they seceded and went back to Washington at that time instead of joining the Confederacy. Scott begged him to be a Union commander but he wouldn’t take up arms against Virginia. If Virginia had stayed in the Union he’d be on the 50 dollar bill and we wouldn’t he having this conversation. Slavery is bad, everyone agrees. However, it’s very obtuse to act like that was the only driving force behind his decisions. Loyalty to your state was a little different in 1860 than in 2020 (thus... a civil war) and Lee’s family had been prominent in VA since Jamestown. His decades of service to the US prior to the war and his work to help heal the country afterwards made him well respected in both the South and the North. But yeah, let’s just forget all that and wipe his name from history cause some loud mouth racist at a school board meeting says so. Soon as we rename all these buildings the work of curing racism will finally be done, right?

This is the man y'all so admire and hold up as a "true southern gentleman":

quote:

In an 1866 account, Norris recalled,

[W]e were immediately taken before Gen. Lee, who demanded the reason why we ran away; we frankly told him that we considered ourselves free; he then told us he would teach us a lesson we never would forget; he then ordered us to the barn, where, in his presence, we were tied firmly to posts by a Mr. Gwin, our overseer, who was ordered by Gen. Lee to strip us to the waist and give us fifty lashes each, excepting my sister, who received but twenty; we were accordingly stripped to the skin by the overseer, who, however, had sufficient humanity to decline whipping us; accordingly Dick Williams, a county constable, was called in, who gave us the number of lashes ordered; Gen. Lee, in the meantime, stood by, and frequently enjoined Williams to lay it on well, an injunction which he did not fail to heed; not satisfied with simply lacerating our naked flesh, Gen. Lee then ordered the overseer to thoroughly wash our backs with brine, which was done.

An impressive human being.

So, tell us, why did the North refuse to let the southern states peacefully secede given that there was nothing in the Constitution that prevented it?

Don’t say slavery because that was an excuse made up as an afterthought that was never mentioned until Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation speech where Lincoln thought he could take the moral high ground after years of sh!tting and p!ssing all over the Constitution.

The South attacked 13 federal forts before Sumter.

How is that seceding peacefully?

The forts were in the South. When the South seceded, all the land in the southern states belonged to the South.

If you look at all the recruiting efforts in the North, slavery was never mention nor was the “attack “on the forts. The only thing that was mentioned was to “save the Union.”

I understand not wanting to pay tribute to Lee in government buildings. But that does not make him a less respectable or admirable individual. There are many who have fought against the US that are highly respected and admired. The word “enemy” is fluid.

They wanted to keep their fair share of tax revenue that the more populous North wanted to reap from the wealthy South. That's something a Marxist can at least sympathize with, right?

In the end, the true reasons for war always lead to money.

Your account suggests that the overseer rejected Lee’s order and, then, they all wait for a county constable to show up. Then, after Lee hoots and hollers to celebrate a fine beatin’, the same overseer, who doesn’t beat people because he’s humane, applied liquid salt to the open wounds of the slaves. Doesn’t really add up to me.
