My mother, at age 94, passed in a home in Ferriday, La. about thirty years ago. It was clean and well kept and they kept my Mom clean.
There was another patient in the same room. A lady that was about fifty years old. She was suffering from a Stroke. Extremely physically impaired She just lay in bed, her limbs jerked with no self control.
She later. was able to walk out of the Home and continued her life.

I have no. idea if it is still reputable.

In home care is 20+/hr through agencies with very subpar care. No good options out there really unfortunately. Some big changes need to happen with the “baby boomer” population coming of age.

Or you could go to Vietnam, Philippines, or India for assisted living. Much lower cost due to low wages.

Watch out for the look back period. Consult with a trust attorney. Losavio & Dejean

I don't know much about them in terms of what is available, if some are much better than others, but my grandma had dementia and was in one for almost 3 years. Well, she was in one that was pretty bad and was moved to another.... that wasn't much better. At those two locations it seems like the nurses do the bare minimum. There is no telling how long they will let some of the patients go uncleaned. Personally, I think its inhumane and if I was in a state where I had no idea where I was and didn't recognize anyone I'd rather be put down then have my dignity striped away.

I don't know how it all works, but I THINK if someone doesn't have a will, whatever they have in monetary value is taken from them.

My father in law has to pay 8k a month for his mom, insurance won’t pay until her savings are exhausted. Such a scam

We have two nursing homes in my town. One owned by a Louisiana company and one owned by a group out of Buffalo New York. The Louisiana owned one is better and it's not close.

Having been through nursing homes with both parents over the last few years, it's easy to say there are no perfect options and definitely no real cheap ones, unless you're out of funds
Fortunately, my parents had a limited long term health care plan that mitigated the exorbitant costs. My mother last place, skilled care location in NC, was around 11k a month this time last year.

Point being that the small companies with fewer locations are more likely to be good.

have an aunt who is pretty much living on social Security. She does have $30k in savings, but I know next to nothing about how this process works as far as what kind of place thy can get into.

I’m sure wherever she goes is going to be shitty.

Unfortunately, $30K will not cover a half of a year living in a private pay assisted living community.

More than likely, her option is going to be limited to a nursing home.

She needs to start converting her savings to cash ASAP. When she has no savings left, Medicaid will pay for long-term care. Nursing home will blow through $30K in a matter of months.

Nursing Home Compare

Do your research, go visit different homes, shop around like you'd do for any major expenditure.

I don’t mean this ugly but payment needs to come from somewhere. That said, a resident should get good care 24/7.

I just find it interesting that many of the same people that complain about Medicaid costs and budget, hide assets so Medicaid will cover this stuff.

What choice do we have? Elder care is priced so high no one can reasonably save for it.

I certainly couldn’t afford a nursing home for 7+ years on retirement savings alone.
