I count only five people earning over $100,000 for 2024. There's been a Library Director and two Assistant Directors for the entire system for decades. I think one assistant oversees library services for the system + the Main Library on Goodwood and the other oversees operation of all the library branches. The people with Librarian III and Librarian IV positions are almost all branch managers or supervisors of branch managers.
Think thats a fair wage?
Thinks its fair they will draw a large portion of that $100K as a pension while all private sector individuals live and die by the 401K (stock market)?
Im just saying these jobs are paid for life, no one else is paid for life. Its kind of ridiculous considering the job doesnt require much if we are honest.

I believe there's a difference between someone making five figures and six figures. I view rounding up in an instance like to 5'10" calling themselves 6'. Or rounding up 5.25" between the legs to 7".

The library has now come out and said that they will have to cut back 45% of their hours if the cuts are made. Meaning that they would only be open for around 6.5 hours a day.
So with their $114,000,000 surplus their answer is to cut hours. This would be strictly done as a "frick you" to the parish citizens. This is not the way for the library to get people on their side.

“It’s a place where you see people playing chess, you see tutors helping students, you see parents reading books for their children,” said the manager of the Zachary library branch.
All those resources are things that could soon be cut if Mayor-President Sid Edwards' proposal to rededicate funds from the library tax gets approval Wednesday by the Metro Council to be on the ballot this fall.
“We’d have to pull back 45 percent of our operating hours,” said Mary Stein, Assistant Director of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library.

The hyperbole in that paragraph to church up what the libraries are is egregious in my opinion.
We are a country of outright liars and selfish people.

Prove it when you find where I am wrong and post it.
I said many months before anything about EBR library that libraries are full of waste.
ERB happens, you learn its full of waste. I dont lie.

The regionals don’t need to open at 9AM (does Greenwell Springs Regional need to exist?) the branches can cut their hours - people don’t show up to the Scotlandville branch until after 3PM
And I have a MLIS and worked at the lieberry system

My question is after the mayor takes money from the library for raises and then the money that they took runs out, how do they continue to pay the raises? What pot of money will they seek to raid after this one to pay for raises?

None of these justify the enormous expense of our libraries.

The library has surplus funds because the library saves up money to do renovations and build new buildings rather than take out loans. This seems like the most responsible government entity I know of. I don't want to punish them for being responsible by taking away their money.
This begs the question, do wd need more libraries? I don’t think so.
Do we need to plan for renovations? Certainly.

You had a good run, but the over funding of the library is long overdue to be addressed and brought in line with a realistic expectations.
Honestly, the thing that pisses me off the most about the libraries absurd funding is that it was not recognized sooner and addressed.
We should have been having this conversation a decade ago when it was last renewed. We did not because we had a lame duck Mayor at the end of his third and final term that was still mad that the voters did not vote for his BILLION dollar downtown tax.
Never the less, we are here now. It is time to address the obvious problems.

I've been as pro library as anyone on this board but after seeing this I say end them all. We have the internet free on our phones.

The libraries are more staffed and higher paid than you could ever realize.
And people keep believing you.
Yes, the library has too much money, and they should cut their hours. (I haven’t really decided on whether or not the police should get their money) The Librarian 1 position starts at $39,157 - that position requires a Master’s Degree. Most employees are not librarians - they are techs - which requires a bachelors degree and it starts at around $30,000/year. Mary Stein makes a lot but she’s been there for eons and she’s the only one in that position - most librarians are not paid what she is paid, and there is maybe one other deputy director.
National average salary for Librarian 1 (a real librarian position requires a masters degree) is $65,000.

Unfortunately, the majority of people seem to be on their side. They’re doing a masterful job at spinning this. I’ve never seen so many people come out in support of the library. Even the community agitators whose constituents are illiterate are on their side, albeit because it impacts police.
Mayor Coach and his communications team have a done a horrible job at pushing this. Almost like he should have hired a communication professional & not someone who was reporting traffic on the news a month ago.

Why are BA/BS and MS/MA required? The card catalog was taught to us in elementary school. Inventory control can be done by an assistant manager at McDonalds. ELI5 what ten classes are needed to get an MA in Library Science to make the 30 hour requirement, and what value they add to the library experience.

Perhaps that would be better asked of the library than the OT.

Ive banged the drum about the parishes for over a year now.
None of yall listen.
Look at every single department, its fricked everywhere with waste.
The library just happened to be the place I saw a couple years ago that I thought was MASSIVE waste then you add the salaries and you get into WTF territory.
Get it how you live.

No, yall dont believe me. Yall would rather downvote and then bring up something absurd.
The waste is everywhere and I mean everywhere. It just takes time to look. Ive seen it.
