The only time I ever had a tornado threaten while i was in school we hid in the hallway. The issue is after the Moore, OK tornado in 2013, two schools: Briarwood and Plaza Towers elementary were destroyed, 7 kids were killed. It seems after this incident schools started letting kids out for the threat of severe weather. They know their schools aren't structurally sound enough to withstand a tornado.

That and the teachers don't want to have to stay a few extra hours because parents are late picking their little brats up.

Georgia is supposed to get rain for the first time since Septmber, some parts it's been longer than that.

Perhaps, but I think you've also got to consider the risk of having 600 elementary aged kids in one area. I agree that many are actually safer there than in their homes, but their homes are also spread out throughout the area. A direct hit on a school could kill dozens of children. That is incredibly unlikely if they're spread out in their homes.

The only time I remember something happening because of rain when I was a kid was when they wouldn't dismiss anyone due to dangerous rain.
I was pissed I had to stay in school for an extra hour.

I can literally not remember one time we had to do that.
The only time we got dismissed early it was already storming, the power got knocked out, and it wasnt coming back on, so thru called the parents. I remember it was flooding one may and my dad took like 10 of us home in his Jeep.
But we never got dismissed because of the possibility of maybe some rain

Just want to say that I was in the making fun of our pansy school systems corner back in February when they did this. But then a tornado hit my home the day of the threats while myself and then two year old were eating lunch/watching cartoons.
After that experience, and my child who now has a meltdown every time it storms (nado is gonna hurt us!!!!), I'm in the err on the side of caution corner.
