East Feliciana schools dismissing early due to weather

Apparently we are about to get obliterated by storms. E. Feliciana is dismissing schools early today. How many more will follow their lead before it's done?

We never went home from school because of rain and wind. We practiced hiding under our desk in such a bad sitch.

I also agree that they go home for some dumb stuff nowdays. But Schools just dont want the liability factor. You get sued for anything now. So I dont disagree with the viewpoint to just send the kids home if you can. Better safe than sorry.

In normal years I get the "better safe than sorry" approach. But with a marginal situation like this (at least that's what the weather guy told me this morning) I don't think it makes sense this year. Local districts have already used Their contingency days with the floods. Doesn't seem prudent to cut hours unless there is an imminent threat. Of course I'm not a school administrator so what do I know?

Lots of schools now are nothing more than big trailers/warehouses. They aren't designed to withstand powerful winds and flying debris.

I assume it has more to do with having the kids on the roads during inclement weather more than it has to do with it just storming while school is going on

The frick?
This storm isn't going to blow down any school buildings... those kids will all be perfectly fine in place... this is all about road safety.

I agree. Plus you never know what will happen in the future. So the marginal days should just stick thru it.

There's gonna be some severe weather tonight, mainly north of I-10, But tomorrow looks to be the real threat in the evening, esp. overnight south of I-10/SE Louisiana.

A tornado could. The primary concern would be having the kids on the road, but many of these portable buildings and such would be a disaster during a tornado.

I'll never understand this attitude. What chance of a tornado or severe thunderstorm is significant enough in your opinion? Throw a percentage out there and let's discuss.

They dismiss school way too much. The only time I ever got to go home early was when the bridge was about to freeze over. Hell, in 6th grade I got home after school only to find our neighbor's house completely destroyed by a tornado.

I would hope that any sort of tornado warning drill includes getting anyone from temporary buildings into the interior of a main school building.
It's not feasible to build an entire school that can withstand a tornado, they don't even do that in places like Oklahoma and Kansas.
ETA: Central areas of a school are likely more safe in a tornado than wherever most of these kids live, and definitely more safe than in a vehicle.
