What’s the difference between a DUI and a DWI? Do they mean the same thing, or do they refer to something different?

Driving Under the Influence and Driving While Intoxicated. As has been said, it's simply a nomenclature issue between jurisdictions. You'll also see OUI/OWI with the O meaning operating.

It really depends on the county.

I knew of a guy that got charged in Palm Beach County a few years back. They threw him in a cell with a bunch of other guys for a few hours and released him ROR, no bail, no judge, just opened the door and let him out.

So you’re privy to the booking process of every police department in the U.S.?

What the frick does that have to do with this incident in Baton Rouge? I know how it works in Baton Rouge and was commenting on that.

Exactly how it happened to me. Said jail was full. Called a friend to pick me up at Troop A and his girlfriend drove my car home. Didn't even get my name listed in the paper.

I can see that but it's not like they pulled you out of your car and told you to have someone come pick you up on the side of the road. You're always going for a ride somewhere in Baton Rouge.

It’s actually a real pain in the arse for a cop to book someone into jail over a DWI. If it’s a first offense, a summons can be written since it’s a misdemeanor, the perps car is towed, and the perp is released to a friend or family member.

Exactly how mine went down.

My girlfriend was almost charged with attempted murder after she picked me up, however.

Same exact thing thing happened to me in 1998. I kept driving until I pulled in a parking spot and he didn’t even tow my car. Wrote me a ticket and I went inside friends apartment. No jail, no name in the paper, my parents only found out because I started getting letters from attorneys almost every day offering their services. That was hard to explain.

That can only happen on first offense though.

You have experience with the booking process in BR? Now it’s clear where you’re coming from.

Happened to me when I got mine at age 20. I was in the hospital after crashing and awaiting surgery the next day, but never got booked into jail. Woke up at the hospital with a trooper standing over saying, "take a deep breath and blow into this."

Always thought DUI was inclusive of drugs for some reason.

Every jurisdiction has their own flavor. Technically, it's not really DWI in Louisiana anymore, but old habits die hard.

maybe they felt safe issuing a citation instead of arresting him because of the low possibility of him getting back in the car and driving away.

Same with me, but never towed, and that's in three Parishes.

I did get the chance to pick someone up at Troop A before he went to jail. Couldn't make it before the officer decided he was bringing my bud in. I met them at EBRPP, and as soon as he was booked, he was released. The trooper said it was a "book and release". He didn't have to post bail or wait for a judge or magistrate

Cop brought me to the station, did the paperwork, then brought me all the way to my house. Who knows.

Well white people should get a break more so than others. Whites are now considered the only oppressed race in this country.
