Yes. I mean I went to the jail, but was immediately released without bond. I think sometimes it is officer discretion.

Maybe not common but it happens.

Perhaps if it’s a misdemeanor charge and since the collision didn’t involve anyone else, they can opt not to book them?

There's always a judge on duty to set bail. Guy was probably held in a holding cell, judge set bail and he bonded out without being technically "booked" into jail.

What’s the difference between a DUI and a DWI? Do they mean the same thing, or do they refer to something different?

It’s actually a real pain in the arse for a cop to book someone into jail over a DWI. If it’s a first offense, a summons can be written since it’s a misdemeanor, the perps car is towed, and the perp is released to a friend or family member.

Same thing, just depends on what state decides to call it.

Exactly how it happened to me. Said jail was full. Called a friend to pick me up at Troop A and his girlfriend drove my car home. Didn't even get my name listed in the paper.

In Baton Rouge, it's not common, but it's not unheard of.

So you’re privy to the booking process of every police department in the U.S.?

Some places release you right after booking if you can be picked up. Others require you to see a magistrate to set your bond which usually means an overnight stay at a minimum.

It really depends on the county. I’ve heard some get funding based on the amount of overnight inmates so they will do the later.
