I still don’t understand why people want to try to compare it to the flu as evidence of why we should open the economy.
It’s irrelevant. If the mortality rate was 3% should we all stay home for another year? No, so why is that the main talking point?
The only thing that was ever a concern and was ever in our control was if the hospitals became overwhelmed. The areas where that didn’t happen should have continued as usual.

We'll forever be two weeks behind Italy.

I was thinking people get out and about, spread virus. 10-14 day incubation time, people get sick and die a couple weeks later

Link?
I was laughed at when I predicted the shutdowns.
I only ever advocated for quarantining areas where the hospitals were about to be overrun. Everything else business as usual.
I never used mortality rate as a reason to shut anything down.

Another one who has been horribly wrong from the start.
What, specifically, was I wrong about? I don't believe I made any death predictions.

Because people get scared of the un known and the flu is known.
Comparing it to the flu is very valid, it’s one of the only things we know well and are comfortable with.
Let’s compare actual deaths from Covid to actual flu deaths. Tons of people in places like nursing homes die with the flu every year that aren’t earmarked as the flu like Covid is. The flu also has a vaccine that prevents many people from getting it or reducing symptoms. If we didn’t have a flu vaccine, how bad would the flu be?
The reality is they are different but similar enough comparisons can be made to humanize it to a point people are comfortable living with it.

Ok I agree with that
But it comes off as if there is a level of mortality where shutting down the entire country is acceptable. That opens the door for the possibility of it being much worse than the flu and people arguing that we need to keep it shut down.

ETA: and now Sao is throwing a bitch fit because he can’t handle being called out for being wrong.
Ever since sometime towards the end of 2016, he completely changed. I'm not sure what happened then that could have made him change so much. Hmmmmmm.

Care to amend you average flu deaths screed or you just going to ignore that like a little bitch?

Maybe not anymore since it’s obvious they were completely wrong from the start. It’s interesting that I haven’t seen WaWaWeeWa or Malik Agar posting nearly as much as they were toward the beginning of the outbreak.
go back to the death projections thread before all of this really started and 99% of OT posters underestimated deaths
by a lot too
there were only a small handful of doomers and still are

That's not called winning. Its called losing purposefully.

quote:I picked the latest year available, figured you would nitpick that if I picked another year. There are multiple years in the past decade where the top end estimate of flu was over 60,000. And some that were 30,000. I'm not pulling out a calculator, maybe we can call 45,000 an average? Or, maybe go frick yourself?

The only person being a little bitch is you. You are just angry that COVID isn't as deadly as you wanted it to be.

Why was this insane? We did not start hitting our highest peaks in daily deaths until about, you guessed it, 2 weeks after Italy.

Millions dead in the US
I might be wrong, but I believe most of the extremely high predictions for this were worst case scenarios if were to never shutdown a single thing. If we pretended that Covid was not a thing and this was just another flu season. We very well could have seen death numbers much much higher. Thankfully it was not the case.

That's weird, the CDC has data from 2018-2019. Convenient you picked the year before, which was the worst flu season in decades as your baseline average.

ETA: This is what happens when the Federal government offers to pay 20% more for COVID and presumptive COVID patients.
Needless to say, the current level of 64,000 COVID deaths is VERY spurious.
