Random Question- does a dump truck require a CDL?

Depending on where he is, have him look at the roll-off dumpster rental business.

Key is to get in with the sand/rock suppliers.

Most people don’t have a “guy” that hauls their material. I buy a lot, and I don’t.

I just call the yard and they get a guy to deliver it

It can be profitable but it's definitely not a guarantee. Finding a good steady job with a reliable and trustworthy contractor is hard to do. Fuel is expensive and insurance in Louisiana is ridiculous. If you don't do your own repairs and maintenance it's hard to turn a decent profit. Plus your always one major breakdown away from having 1000s of dollars worth of repairs

I just re read the OP. What about a bobcat or piece of equipment like that? I think it would be a hell of a lot more fun then driving a dump truck all day. Can get a 3/4 ton truck to pull it and your insurance and what not is a lot cheaper. Work your own hours for the most part, pick and choose your jobs.

ETA: I can’t remember if you need all your fingers?

A friend used to say his retirement plan was to get one of those to dig graves and learn the bagpipes to play at the funerals.

If he’s close to an oil patch, look up continuous sucker rod welding. If he can heat treat 4130 metal, he can find work.

Job is mostly running coiled rod to location and forge welding pins on rod. Lightning rod, COROD, and lifting solutions google search will give you a good start.

Get the dump truck, a mini-ex, a bobcat/skid steer, etc. Not all at once, but it is something he could work towards. You can do well with a couple pieces of equipment. I know a couple guys who have more work than they want who started with a little mini-excavator or bobcat. People are always looking to get work done.
