I've done this a few times when i happened to have change floating in the center console. Not surprisingly, I've always gotten the correct change back with no issue. Almost as if there is a computer telling them how much change to give.
I assume anyone that tells the story the way you have it is lying.

My GF gave showed me a list of her students and I almost didn't believe it. The names were off the chain

1 and 2 happened to me. Actually I was the teacher who saw many of the names on paper or met the students. I had one student who had 4 apostrophes in her name and had a hyphenated middle name.

My MIL is a teacher, she repeats a lot of the fake ones(Lemongelo, La-A, etc...) . but she actually had a "Princess Queen of Sheba" as first and middle name, among a few others

First thing I thought of when I read your thread title

The total will be like 16.20. I give 21.20 to get a 5 dollar bill back. When they get the 20 and 1 dollar Bill's with some change, they will try to give me the single back and are just confused as all hell for about a full minite.
If you be did this to me, I would give you 5 $1 back and dare your bitch arse to say something.

I ignore most all stories that begin with "In college, I...".

Then you would run out of 1s in your drawer

The first two are legit. I have never done the third one but I can see someone doing that. It doesn't mean they came up with the idea but I am sure plenty of people have done that. Your examples are horrible.

Is this a spin-off off the truck nuts prank thread?

ve had this happen to me on more than one occasion at a local gas station. The total will be like 16.20. I give 21.20 to get a 5 dollar bill back. I’ll say that #1 is the most plausible to be true.
Number one is most plausible to be true, but not in the scenario op described. It's more plausible in the scenario above that another poster described.
99/100 times if you give someone 5.20 for a 4.20 cost you will get a dollar back with, at most, minimal hesitation.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Last parent that bragged to me about their child's 35 ACT: The kid dropped out his senior year.
