Their actual target demographic is probably significantly more female than you may think. The whole show with the family togetherness and such probably plays really well with southern housewives.

Exactly...Jesus drank wine, and gave several parables giving analogies warning about not using old wine bottles for new wine, etc...I had a friend that was Independent Baptist (very hardcore) and believed that Jesus drank grape juice, not wine - that's a classic case of twisting Jesus' actions to fit your political and religious viewpoints. Jesus drank wine, but he didn't get inebriated.
Nobody was drinking grape juice in any quantity without pasteurization or refrigeration.

Didn't Jesus also use slave ownership in a few parables? I don't give a shite either way, bit I'm not sure you can use this as a good argument.

There were two Greek (the universal language in biblical Palestine): words for wine One meant the alcoholic drink we are familiar with. The other meant "fruit of the vine" and was cooked down into a non alcoholic thick, syrupy paste that they mixed with water when ready to drink. When the Bible talks about wine's negative effects, it means the alcoholic version. When it's talking about the positive effects, it means the non-alcoholic version. Also, even the alcoholic wine was much weaker than the alcoholic beverages we have now. You had to drink a lot for it to have any effect at all.
That's the evangelical argument for why their stand against alcohol is Biblically correct. Not that I endorse it, but they have thought it out, and it makes logical sense to them.

While I know it makes sense to them, to me it's a classic case of putting persons preference above correct hermeneutics. They come to scripture with the preconceived notion that alcohol is bad so they devise a way to discount the scriptures that mention wine. These are the same folks (I include myself in this) that say you must let the scripture speak for itself and not your personal preferences. They hate twisting scripture. But it seems like this is exactly what is being done with the two types of wines argument.

Psam 104:15 which reads that God gave "wine to gladden the heart of man".
Well, a little buzz is okay; outright drunkenness is not okay--just see what happened to Lot after a night of drinking.
Also, Timothy said to drink wine to prevent food poisoning; small doses of alcohol kills off bacteria in food and prevents diarrhea.

Absolulty! I agree 100%.

I heard an Evangelical argue that since Jesus ate unleavened bread that he must have also drunken "unleavened wine" as well. Interesting claim, except no verse in the Bible specifies the wine being unleavened (which it presumably would have specified, given the fact that the wine everyone else drank at that time was, in fact, fermented)--and, besides, grape juice wasn't even invented until 1869.

Well, women make better sandwiches when they're not stressed about what kinda coffee their boss wants.
Also, stay the frick away from our white women.

This is such a strange thing to be upset about

Jesus liked wine. It was probably better than that swill.

I'm Southern Baptist, and I've never even heard the no drinking rule mentioned at church. Can't say I know of any Baptists that don't drink just for that reason.

Isn't that pretty much religion in a nutshell? Even if not intentional, beleifs are shaped by your background and cultural norms.

To an extent but there are hermeneutical methods that can restrain our personal presuppositions.

Nothing in the bible against or condemns drinking wine or any alcohol. The sin is when you become drunk, that call gluttony. No difference than getting drunk than pigging out on turkey and everything else you will eat today.

Their marketing manager/firm is laughing all the way to the bank.
