Yeah, the media finally picked up and I read that. I’m just wondering if the vehicular homicide charges will stick since they crossed the lane and hit him. Of course they can hit him with fleeing the scene and DUI, but he was hit by another car. I’m also wondering what caused the driver to cross the lane. I wonder if he had a heart attack or something.

Unbelievable . . .
He buried his sweet wife, Peggy just two days before
and now,
he and two of his beautiful, 12 year old granddaughters’ lives were tragically taken by a drunk driver. ??????
Please keep the family in your prayers in the days and weeks ahead. Such a senseless, tragic loss for so many.
We love you, Mikie Barmore.
And we will never forget you.

Speeding is the #1 factor in fatal accidents every year by percentage. So why shouldn’t speeding have the same harsh penalties as drunk driving?

And, in this case, you're punishing them for driving drunk.

What am I missing?

The article says the car crossed the centerline and hit the person who was supposed to be drunk?

I’m not defending drunk driving but it seems like it had nothing to do with this incident.

Harsher penalties are needed for sure

We need to add harsher penalties for drunk driving, and we need to make texting while driving have the same penalties as drunk driving.

This is what everyone defaults to in anger, but short of going to Scandinavian levels of DUI totalitarianism, the return on these penalties is poor.

The uncomfortable conversation is that certain segments of society are genetically predisposed to have a different reaction to alcohol than others, and no law will change that, and the likely fact is that it could overly penalize someone from a demographic least likely to cause an accident.

First things first, if someone is drunk and about to pass out, they should pull over to the side of the road and sleep it off. That is currently illegal I believe, and will get you arrested for dui if the keys are still in the vehicle and you are still drunk when the cops check out the car on the side of the road. This is beyond stupid if the intent is to minimize deaths. Pulling off the road and stopping a dangerous situation should always be an option.

I say this not because I want an excuse to drink and drive, I say it as someone who lost a cousin who was about to graduate as a chemical engineer from TAMU and was killed by a chronic drunk. If she would have slept if off in a ditch, my cousin's family wouldn't have gone through what happened after.

We also have too many assholes who kill people in DWI accidents, but flee the scene so their BAC is normal if/when they're caught or turn themselves in to authorities.

Behavior that is In no way unique to teens. I’m not even sure it’s any more prevalent in teens than the general population at this point.

Yes I did. Once. And not that it makes it better, it was late at night on backroads with very little traffic. It was a dumb mistake. Im sure I am not the only one on the board who has driven after drinking, which doesn't make what I did any better.. I understand you might think I am perfect, but I have made mistakes.

Seeing on Facebook a Linda Lavander girl passed away and guessing that’s who you’re talking about.

Yep. Happened on one of ours. Guy crossed the median on a hill, I was able to swerve and miss the head on, but he sideswiped me. I went off the road into a nearby tree head on. He flipped and rolled. Crawled out his sunroof and was able to walk away into the night. Didn't turn himself in for 4 days.
