Dropbox software engineer in San Francisco commutes from Hawaii to save on rent

To save money on rent, Aleksei Gribov, a guy who works as a software engineer at Dropbox, in San Francisco, has recently decided to move to Hawaii. He spoke to one of our reporters, describing the whole story.

Aleksei moved to the Bay Area two years ago (from Russia) and rented a studio in Redwood City for about $2500 per month. With the money he makes at Dropbox, that was an easily affordable price. But during the two years he spent in US, his salary did not keep up with the rise in home prices, even if he got promoted twice.

“I just realized I was paying more than 60% of my salary on rent! That’s just stupid. I did not move to California for this bullshite. On top of that, Dropbox postponed their IPO, which means I’m pretty much screwed up financially.” angrily confessed Aleksei.

He got the idea of living in Hawaii from his recent 2-week vacation, when he realized that he spent less money in Hawaii than he would’ve spent in San Francisco. But he didn’t do all this just to save money on rent.

“The flight is just a 5-hour long. They have Wi-Fi on the planes these days, so I can even do some work during the trip. Hawaii is fantastic. Everyone knows that! Unlike San Francisco, the streets there don’t smell like pee and weed and the weather is amazing. In addition to that, as opposed to the Bay Area, there are no homeless people in Hawaii and the best part is that there are lots of hot girls, who don’t give a shite about diversity in tech companies.” said Aleksei.
