The dude that started the Oculus VR headset company (Palmer Luckey) is doing defensive stuff with drones for military/LE. The company is called Anduril. One thing is Anvil, a defensive drone that locks on to a targeted drone and just flies into it and smashes it.

Accurate motion tracking used to be a high art requiring specialized computer chips. Now it can be done on a cell phone with an app. That kind of ability will have defensive and offensive applications.

Also, how messed up is the person that has to zoom in and observe to make sure the soldiers are dead after each hit.

Reminder: millennials were groomed for this with Modern Warfare. And the hood was groomed with rap music and GTA.

It’s almost as if the government has their hands in pop culture or something.

As a career infantryman, the only thing close to drones is mines. With artillery or mortars, you have the ability to constantly keep moving, making it more difficult to put effective fire on your position. Indirect fire sucks, but mines/drones are worse. Thankfully, I predate widespread drone warfare and didn’t have that to worry about.

Some sort of optic to see them and belt fed would work, or a shotgun type weapon

How about a very simple plexi glass bullet proof shield.

I would just hide behind that sucker.

Let's use China as a hypothetical. You wouldn't have any issue killing chinese kids that were sent over here because they have no choice?

None whatsoever as long as they are fighting. If they are surrendering I wouldn’t kill them

Well, when we used to slice people up with swords and bayonets there wasn't crystal clear video footage of the suffering it wrought and of the soldiers laying there dying in agony. Now that stuff can be livestreamed and the reality of war is more accessible than ever.

And every man of fighting age was conscripted into the army. It wasn’t live-streamed, you saw it for real.

It's really easy for people who will never have to experience that to cheer on armed conflict because they can block out the reality. Seeing an average person who would rather not be fighting get their hands blown off and then lay there suffering until a second drone finishes the job may actually start to change people's minds.

Agree to disagree. It will just de-sensitize people and they Will compartmentalize it

Honestly, I think the use of drones in this manner should be banned. As crazy as it sounds, even war has rules. Going back to last century there are many examples of weapons (mustard gas) that were banned from the battlefield. Removing the human element of killing your enemy removes the natural desire of trying to avoid a military conflict in the first place. Where’s the restraint when you can just send endless amounts of explosive drones?

It’s just a matter of time before drone countermeasures are mainstream. Like anything else, someone will find a way to defend against them. Shooting them down with shotguns isn’t the answer.

I said it before, IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan were scary as hell and I won’t entertain anyone trying to convince me otherwise. They would literally bury 155shells under a road then repave it and you’d never know until you were watching the world rumble around you. Or hollow out the backside of a tree and boom.

Having said that, frick this drone stuff.

These things will eventually have GPS, terrain mapping and image recognition. The scary part is one computer can control thousands.

I'm not saying that's the case with every soldier, and I'm not saying I wouldn't do what I had to do to protect, but I would take no pleasure in it and I'd probably be sick every night about it.
Sure, but I didn't see anything in this thread that indicates that anyone is taking pleasure in it. I'm sure some are, but, I'm sure there are plenty that don't, and some that are "sick every night about it."

You are arguing against a stance that no one has made (soldiers "take pleasure" in droning others).

I would contend that most using these drones to kill their enemies would take at least some pleasure in it, if not a great deal of it. No different than celebrating killing your enemy on the battlefield, and with drones you’re even more removed from the brutality of it. I know that if given the choice to kill their enemy face to face in a fair fight or pretty easily like this with a drone, most would choose the easy way to ensure that they get home safe every night.

That doesn’t seem like some unreasonable stance to me.

If Russia was invading the US I'd take immense pleasure in every Russian that got splattered across the battlefield.

You have a choice in war when your homeland is invaded

Watch your own family die and die yourself while feeling good about your morals

Or

Kill the people invading you and feel crummy about yourself
There's a 3rd choice. Leave your country and come get some sanctuary in the good ole USA. Just remember to vote for Democrats once you get here.

ETA: We have been killing with drones for for a couple decades. Pretty sure we started it. My nephew, who has flown them, said Obama was who made it a regular thing for our military. I would imagine our troops have helped train the Ukrainian troops to use them.
