I am currently driving a 14 year old car. Looks like it's approaching the end of it's life, and I'll probably be buying something much newer sometime this summer.

I had this thought about, once I get the new car, maybe doing some driving for Uber/Lyft. Would be very part time - maybe only one night a week, and more during big events in the city (NOLA). Not looking to make a ton of money. Just thought it might be fun to do. I enjoy driving and I enjoy interacting with people. If I made a few bucks along the way that could help offset the new car payment, even better.

Anyone here have been a driver? Especially in NOLA? Anything to consider? Pros? Cons? Good idea? Terrible idea?

NOLA = daily clean up of vomit and human feces.

Not to mention you may get shot.

Don’t do it.

You get this idea after seeing the barstool video of the chick making out with the Uber?

If you do decide to do it, make sure you have the proper insurance coverage. Regular auto insurance won't do.

I don't do it often but it's fun. I don't know about NOLA, but in Hammond/BR on an average day/night you'll prob make around $20/hr. That will go up if there's an event or something going on that causes a surge.

Like I said... I don't really do it for the money so much as it's fun interacting with random people (especially when they're drunk).

Sign up, try it out, and decide if you like it or not.

While working for Uber/Lyft they cover your insurance.

quote:

App on

While waiting for a request
While you’re online with Uber and before you accept a request, you are covered for your liability to a third party if you are in an accident when you’re at fault. A third party is someone other than yourself. Coverage includes your liability to pay another person’s medical bills or to pay for property damage (like a damaged fence).

Coverage Limits vary by state, but are at least:

$50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident for bodily injury
$25,000 per accident for property damage
If you are not at fault, you may make a claim against their insurance. Your personal insurance policy may also cover you in this situation. Please check your personal coverage for more information.

Request accepted and on trip

On your way to pick up a rider and during a trip
While you drive to pick up a rider after accepting a request and during an Uber trip, you are covered for three things:

1. Third party liability coverage
This insurance covers your liability for damages to any third party such as another driver, pedestrian, or property in case of an accident when you’re at fault. Coverage limits vary by state, but are at least $1,000,000 per accident.

2. Uninsured or underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage
This insurance covers you and anyone else in your vehicle in case of an accident where another driver is at fault, but does not have sufficient insurance. This also covers hit and run accidents where the at-fault driver cannot be identified. Coverage limits vary by state, but are at least $1,000,000 per accident.

3. Contingent collision and comprehensive coverage
This insurance covers your vehicle in case of an accident whether it was your fault or not, as long as you maintain auto insurance that includes collision coverage for that vehicle while not on an Uber trip. Coverage limit is up to the actual cash value of your vehicle. There is a $1,000 deductible.

Unless I’m working, it’s fricken weird to sit there in silence, or stare at your phone. Uber drivers usually have some good stories that make the ride more enjoyable

Big events can pay pretty well but it can also mean a massive headache trying to find your passengers and then making your way to their destination. You are paid for your time but that rate is something around $3/hour so the goal is to keep moving and not get stuck in traffic.

There are various ways to measure the pay more accurately, the researchers conceded. One way yielded a median profit of $8.55 per hour, with 54% earning less than minimum wage in their states (as of 2016) and 8% losing money. Another way resulted in a median profit of $10 per hour, with 41% earning less than minimum wage and 4% losing mone Yea frick that

I've heard the money isn't too great, but if you're looking at it as just killing time and making a few extra bucks, it might be decent.

Personally, I'd be way more interested in Waitr because I don't particularly like interacting with people. But I think Waitr actually makes you work specific shifts. You don't just sign on at your leisure.

God bless you people. I utilize the service all the time when drunk, but we are cut from different cloths.

I go out of my way to avoid most people.

I can't stand when people try to chat me up in line or in an elevator or on an airplane, etc. I give short abrupt answers and try to look annoyed.

I'm exactly the same way. I could drive for Uber/Lyft if I was guaranteed no chatty passengers.

I've been thinking about doing it a few times a week just to waste some time and meet some interesting people.

I was downtown on a Saturday during the day and took a Uber home a while back and the lady driving said she drives in from Slidel early on a Saturday or Sunday and usually gets a run to the airport. She will try to pick up someone at the airport or near it and then goes back to the city. After a few rides, she heads back home with a little extra money.

I don't like being in a lot of traffic though and I know what's how it will be during the bigger profitable events, so I'm not sure if I will ever pull the trigger.

I’ve heard waitr is terrible. Might as well get a restaurant job at that point.

Think you can put on the app that you’re hard of hearing so no one talks to you
