It was weird a few weeks ago when there was a thread about a poster who lost his son, and right near it was someone sad about his dog. On one hand I understand the love for a dog bc I love my dog but on the other hand some perspective might be useful.

Dogs are great friends. They never judge and always love you. OP, I hope your friend is going to be okay.

ETA I posted before I saw your update. I’m sorry about your loss.

Man I hate that for your family. Pups bring a lot of joy to our lives and it’s terribly sad when they leave us.

Hope for the best for you.

About 9 weeks ago, our dog woke up with huge lymphnodes. Popped up overnight. Vet, diagnosis, started chemo for the cancer and she died 2 days later. We still cry a little every night. I miss that dog terribly.

Edit: Sorry, didn't read the whole thread. Sorry for your loss. Just lived thru it myself.

I can take solace in the fact that I was there with her and was able to pet her through the whole thing. I was happy that she didn’t pass by herself while we were at work and we got to say our goodbyes. Tomorrow will be tough when I tell my son that she has crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I honestly feel sorry for you. A person that goes through their life and never experiences the amazing bond with a dog is missing out on one of the great parts of life.

Awwww she looks like she was a huge sweetheart. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

We are going through something similar. They found a large liver mass in our 10 year old lab mix a week ago. Surgery isn't even an option. And even if it was, would only prolong the inevitable and likely cause him more pain if he lived through the surgery. He is still acting mostly normal so we are just loving on him and considering every day he acts happy a gift, knowing that once he starts getting worse we will have to bring him for that final vet visit. I'm just now getting to where I don't just tear up when I think about what is in our future.

And anyone that says "it's just a dog" can go frick themselves. They are a part of your family and are the best friend that you don't deserve but are so blessed to have.

Hardest damn thing, making that decision. Been there, man.

Time will heal. Get another animal. It helps.

Don’t know if it would make it worse or better to know and worry or be blindsided like tonight. I think I would have liked the time to spoil the hell out of her but we did a pretty good job of it even without knowing

but this girl I raised from a pup

First of all, sorry to hear you lost her. She looked like a sweet dog in the picture.

My GSD puppy is just over 8 months old and this story made me give him an extra big hug. It’s my first one I’ve raised and I’m dreading the day we part. I’ll give him a treat tonight in memory of yours!

We had an Irish Terrier that went the same way. Started acting different and then went and laid under the kitchen table. Took him to the vet and got the same diagnosis. I was out of town and didn’t get to say my goodbye to a loyal friend. Take solace in the fact that you had the privilege. My poor son slept with the leash in his bed that night.

Man I lost my first gsd almost the same way.

We came home from a lake trip 2 Memorial Day years ago and my dude just went into this blank frozen stare. Took him to the vet and blood panel checked out so we brought him home, in which he died 3 hours later in my arms. Ended up being eat up with GI cancer. Fack cancer!

Time will heal, but take solace in the fact that she didn’t suffer long.. I wouldn’t want to go down that path of dragging an inevitable decision on for 3+ months.

Nothing like the bond a shepherd will provide. She will be waiting for you one day.

Either way just sucks.

frick cancer.

Let yourself have the time to grieve over your friend. Take tomorrow off work if you can(if you need it). Good luck with breaking the bad news to your son. Maybe let him pick out a favorite picture of her and put it in a frame to place in his room. Do the same for yourself. I've already looked and there are nice memory boxes that you can get to place a picture of your dog on the outside and place items in (ashes, leash, collar, etc).

Really sorry for your loss, bud.

It’s never easy to lose a true friend, but I hope loving memories will bring comfort to you.

Please go adopt two shelter dogs tomorrow. Preferably two older muts. It will be the best thing in memory of your pup as well as the best lesson for your son.
