Dr Wants to Prescribe Statins..I Disagree

Just had yearly physical done. Here is my bloodwork:
Total Cholesterol: 216
LDL: 137
HDL: 62
Triglycerides: 57
Glucose: 83
HbA1c: 4.7
Creatinine: 0.60
VLdl: 17
Blood pressure:108/73
Overall the numbers are ok imo. He says my cholesterol concerns him and it may be time to look into statins. I'm thinking it's time to look for a younger PCP.

Ask him what kind of kickbacks he gets from the statins he prescribes.

You are borderline high. Take the dang statin.

Docs tried to put me on them for years when kickbacks and "training trips" were still allowed. I haven't heard so much since the FDA clamped down.
There are good studies out now showing that cholesterol is largely genetic and also that your ratio and not the base numbers are what is important. Lastly, I have seen a couple of studies recently linking long-term statin use to early onset dementia. No thanks.

Where is your medical degree from?

You can get your numbers down by watching your diet now that you know they are borderline high.
Personally, I would not take the meds and I would probably get a better Dr that I could trust. Not one that is a pill pusher just because he likes the rep.

If your borderline, just eat some Cheerios

Not even close to needing a statin. If it gets over 250, then I'd consider it.

The statins work...but there is a side effect with long term prescriptions of statins...one that I found out about....Memory loss. Short term memory loss is a known side effect. It sucks...but as soon as you come off the statins within a a few days...the memory loss goes away.

I had a recurring anxiety issue awhile back. First doc pushed some pills that were new to market and gave me some bad side effects. I went back in explaining the side effects and he said to give it a little more time and gave me another sample. Went to fill a prescription and it was like $500 for the month. Told the doc to write me something more common and not with the side effects. Doc wouldn't do it and I never went back.
New doc said that I didn't need the pills and told me to cut down from 8 cups of coffee daily and I'd be good. He also said that people who go to a doctor who doesn't write a script have a really low return rate so it's a client retention thing more now days.
I'll stick with the new doc long term.

drink a glass a Metamucil every morning. Your #s will go down and you will do your lower unit a world of good.

I questioned him about the other #'s like my triglycerides, A1C, glucose and HDL, which are pretty great from what I can tell by googling... He mainly seemed focus on the cholesterol #.
Oh my T Chol/ HDL ratio is 3.5

Family history of cardiac issues? All your numbers are fine. Your cholesterol total is fine and better than the majority of Americans. I read a book by Dr. Michael Debakey about the heart in the 21st century. Cholesterol is one of the often overblown aspects of the checkup process as having too low of cholesterol can be a bad thing. I wouldn't take satins based on those numbers. Just exercise, make smart food choices, and manage stress.

My cholesterol is fine but I am on a low dose statin. Statins have shown some benefits other than just reducing cholesterol. If you can take a statin with no side effects and no changes in liver function I would recommend it.

nope.....its a 3.0
still good. 3.5 is ideal.
I go with the others. diet and research a new PCP.
if in BR, Dr David Carver.

Your numbers arent bad at all
A doctor who looks simply at total chol and not your ratios is a bad dr
