We need to go as Montana did until 1999 and say screw it.

The National Motorists Association did a study that showed the safest period on Montana’s Interstate highways was when there were no daytime speed limits or enforceable speed laws.

Good point. We should ban cargo planes too while we're at it.

Will the malfunction rate be higher or lower than the current accident rate of commercial trucking?

The people have clearly shown that they can not be responsible on that stretch of highway.

Human truck drivers already do this, so ...

Automation is the future of trucking, and it will be a huge net positive for safety.

Most likely lower. I am in favor of it 100%, but the human condition will dictate that people don't want them because they malfunction.

Same reason we don't use nuclear power like we should. It is literally the safest, most abundant energy on the planet and we turn our noses up at it because tech from the 60s fails? Humans are not rational when it comes to shite that is not controlled by a human, even if it is mathematically safer.

FWIW I work in the oil and gas industry too.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your post. But most humans have zero attention span and outrage over the small percentage of malfunctions will subside when the news cycle changes

I've been vouching for this since I could drive.

If you are too big of a pussy to push the pedal to the metal stay off the tollway/interstate/highway PAW PAW!

Automated vehicles that will exponentially safer and more efficient than the status quo?

The automated trucks would be great.

You'll still have a rolling road block in the right lane when 20 of them get stuck behind a coonass towing his 14 foot Cajun special behind a 1988 Silverado at 45 mph. What are the chances everyone in that left lane are driving as fast as you want them to drive.

Those automated trucks will drive under the speed limit and leave a proper distance between each other, which will be perfect when the lawyer in his Mercedes SUV cuts the 2nd of 20 trucks off so he can pull into the rest stop and send an email.

Then, 19 trucks have to break rapidly because the computer tells them to, and the plant baw that's 2 feet behind the last truck, waiting to get in the left lane and roll coal on those bitches, rear ends the last truck and loses his last 4 teeth to the tractor's rear bumper.

That's unfortunate for Jenny, who's bringing Jaxtyn back from his travel ball tournament and is too busy in her phone to recognize the accident happening.

Automated trucks won't fix assholes.

Interstate needs to be 3 lanes, period.

The State Police are nothing but state IRS agents. The state police need to be cut back dramatically.

Whatever it is, it'll still be lower than the accident rate of amateur drivers.

That only works in La. due to density if left lane laws are enforced.

If La. was sincere about road safety especially on the interstate and the basin bridge they would enforce left lane laws!!!

The government cannot legislate safety.

I agree! We should disband the NHTSA, FAA, NTSB, FDA, OSHA, and all state/local/federal law enforcement agencies.

You will see more wrecks if they lower it. No matter what there will always be assholes that fly thru there. Mixing them with slow movers won’t fix anything.

I think the key is to make it a flat 65 for everyone and ramp up enforcement. Maintain the right lane only rule for trucks though.

Dem plant baws in the jacked up 250’s would make an automated truck short circuit and crash with some of the maneuvers they pull. They are a danger to the public and should be regulated.

Eta: the ones in the impalas and chargers are not any better.

Seems like the basin bridge is the perfect location and proper application for speed cameras that can capture speeders 24 hours a day. Put them every 1/2 mile.

I despise speeding camera tickets, but I'd much rather see photo enforcement than some slap dick sitting on the shoulder of the bridge waiting to pop someone. That shite is incredibly unsafe to everyone involved.

Would it be cheaper to do that, or to 3 lane I-10 from Lafayette to Baton Rouge?

The basin is a pain in the arse right now, and keeping trucks in the right lane wouldn't fix it.

I agree that it needs to be done (added lanes), but doubt we will see it done to the basin bridge anytime soon.

In that scenario, would the existing structures be able to be expanded or would it require an all new bridge?

I have no idea.

49 and 190 definitely need work, but I think the basin should be a higher priority.

I’ve been driving this road for 25 years plus 5 days a week photo enforcement is a racket and I’m so glad its gone in Lafayette. However, the trucks that follow the speed limit in most cases are 10 feet apart following too close to each other. I agree with an earlier poster that they will be driving at 80 mph at 4:00 am. That is usually gravel truck drivers and they are usually the most aggressive truck drivers. Personally I believe they should be detoured to US 190. I also despise the way they just keep driving along as if nothing is wrong when one of their tires blow out and throw shite every where.
