The Department of Transportation announces they will soon begin the process of widening Interstate 10 between the I-49 interchange and the Atchafalaya Basin. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says this area of the interstate is heavily trafficked by freight trucks. He believes widening the road to three lanes in both directions will alleviate congestion.

quote:

Wilson says a $60 million federal FASTLANE grant will pay for the repaving and widening of I-10. He says there are a lot of transportation improvements needed in Louisiana, but this project best fits the criteria for this award.

quote:

Wilson says this federal grant frees up state dollars to be used for other highway improvements. He says construction to widen I-10 should begin in January, and both lanes will remain open during the roadwork.

Is this really necessary?

For only that portion of I-10.

I-10/I-12 needs to be 6-lane border to border.

only if that money can only be used in that parish...it would be better spent about 50 miles to the east

Only if they plan on widening the basin to 3 lanes immediately afterward.

It'll be nice when it's finished but I'm assuming a bottleneck will be taking place before the basin bridge. More wrecks.

And like SFP says.. No more 10 for the next 5-6 years.

Nah, between Welsh and Crowley 4 lanes is fine.

So it'll be three lanes going into 2 at the basin bridge? Seems pretty stupid.

And yeah, that should be for making I 10 3 laned from the foot of the BR bridge to the basin in both directions. Ugh

Yeah, this portion of I-10 is the "best fit" for expansion...never mind the fact that East bound I-10 narrows to one lane at the end of the MS River bridge...this area doesn't meet the criteria for "best fit"
