It’s most efficient but it’s impossible to pull of because of other drivers which makes you look like the a-hole who might cause a wreck.
Same as this. This may be the proper way to turn but if you try to do this you’re going to cause a wreck and everyone will think it’s you who is the idiot. Just as the zipper merge it’s simply impossible to pull off thanks to everyone else on the road.

Screw that. Those assholes aren't trying to merge properly, they are trying to skip a bunch of vehicles. You can tell because they are hauling arse to get as far ahead as quickly as possible before they merge and by merge, they usually just cut someone off in a gap that was not big enough for a natural merge without any attempt to put their blinker on and give the drivers a chance to open up the gap more.
And OP is an idiot, as well as any other dumbass that thinks the zipper merge is the wrong way.

I use airline hwy a lot and abandoned the correct way to do that a long time ago, especially the way some of those medians are made

But but but, someone may cut me in line and I waited my turn.

It help cut down on the length of backups, but state police also get pissed when a semi tries to zipper merge. I know this from experience - had a 30 minute discussion with a trooper once about this. Pulled me over at the end of the construction zone, said I "skipped line". I asked him to tell me where DOTD recommends getting in a single line miles from the zone, or do they recommend the zipper merge. His panties got in a twist and started doing log checks, insurances, etc.

Great, so can DODT stop putting “merge right” signs a mile in advance of when we need to merge?

Steadyhands speaks truth.
These people know what they are doing. You dont have to go all the way to the front and wait till last minute unless you are being an a-hole. This is the kind of crap i did as a teenager.
Zipper merging is for those whole believe in a perfect world.

this is the most efficient.
Problem is the people who wait till last minute dont do this.
i experienced it today. A dude tries to speed up but im letting the guy in front of him in, he shouldnt have done that he should have gone behind me, so i didnt let him in and he gets stuck. it was just construction instead of the actual lane ending, but still.

Its not wrong but im guessing you are the guy that speeds up and merges without a blinker then does it again for the next lane because you need to go rt but are in the far left lane like a fricking moron.
I see this coming off the causeway all the time. People go to the far left lane to get in front of everyone then try to get on I10. frick you and get in line in the rt lane. the rest of us in the left are continuing on causeway and not going on I10.

The reason that zipper merge doesn't work is because that last diagram is unrealistic... have you ever seen a gap between the cars in the right lane large enough to allow a car in?
That gap existed 2 miles back... when everyone already in the right lane saw the signs that the left lane was ending and moved over. They've already "zippered."

The 3 graphics aren’t equal
The “correct” graphic has way less traffic in the main lane. That’s where the idea fails. When people are waiting 50 cars back in the main lane and people keep leaving the main lane to try to skip a few cars in the merge lane.

You’re not talking about the same thing, dumbfrick.
When two lanes become 1, you zipper merge dumbass.
When there’s a specific lane to use to turn then get in line, don’t use another lane to skip ahead.

frick those people. I will continue to tighten up my gap and laugh at them on the occasion that everyone else ahead of me did what I did and forced them to come to a complete stop by the cones. If I merged ahead of time and waited in line so can the rest of you mofos. Last time that happened, the driver was honking because I didn't let them in right before they end of the line. I honked back and flipped the bird.

Note: The zipper merge is not as effective when traffic is moving at highway speeds and motorists should merge when it's safe to do so.
This is for 35 mph surface streets, not for running up on the cones on the interstate at 70 mph and jumping into a stacked lane at the last minute.
