Hillar didn't pursue the hate crime law because he had an easier case as 2nd degree battery, and convicting the perp of that made him eligible for a longer sentence due to habitual offender laws.
He explained it in a press conference IIRC

That would save a lot of money and time, but we are too stupid as a society to realize that.

If he gets life under the convicted felon habitual offender there is no parole.

I'm generally not a fan of habitual offender penalties for non-violent crimes...mainly drug possession.
Donald D is a perfect example of what habitual offender laws are for. Armed robbery, purse snatching (forcible robbery), and unprovoked assault...matter of time before he kills someone.

If they don't want to do it themselves I'll be happy to. I'd make a great hangman. Build a nice gallows, get the Feng Shui right, some flowers to liven up the place. Sell tickets even, donate some of the money to their victims.
We can even hold a noose tying contest for the kids. Whoever ties the best one gets to have theirs used in the main event! Fun for the whole family!
Then Pull the lever and snap, dangle, pop.

This has already been explained and beaten to death here, it just makes certain posters happy to keep ignoring why it wasn't charged as a hate crime.

I am sure he is a burden on taxpayers in or out of prison...at least he can't harm any taxpayers in prison.

Now convicted of second-degree battery in the May 12, 2013 attack, Dickerson faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison because the East Baton Rouge district attorney will use Louisiana's habitual offender law against him. Dickerson has previously been convicted of armed robbery, purse snatching and a sex crime involving a juvenile.

He probably has already, or been an accomplice to a homicide.
