Our beagle is now 12. Only time he shows us attention is when he wants to piss outside or he wants a treat.
What's this loyalty thing you speak of? I think you mean neediness.

Depends on the dog
My father in law (retired now) did surgery on big dogs with blown ACL and used a thick almost fishing line to make new acl and for dogs that walk don’t run and don’t jump it works and less expensive.
I had a French Britney and she ran every time opened door to hunt. Had to do more serious fix from expert. Did both legs eventually one at a time $5k and gave me a break on other leg $3.5k.
If blew one often they will blow the other as they favor it.
I got a few years more of her pointing birds so worth it and I could afford it but keep in mind may be both knees eventually.
Tough call on older dog , how much pain can the dog walk to go out?

Recovery is long and slow
Kept mine kenneled for 4 weeks carried her out kept in lease so did not run only let out to eat and piss and crap.
Dogs do adapt and can take a lot of pain.

We did TPLO on our 12 YO Aussie and she’s healed but her arthritis is so bad it probably wasn’t worth it. She probably has another 12 months or so before it’s time

Shop around mine was 3k for an 11yo dog, there are other techniques as well apart from tibial plateau. also size and weight play a factor, its was a 3-month recovery, I prob would not do it to my dogs at 14 but that is the end of the lifecycle of my breed. If your dog was not active before the surgery you can prob go without, but if it was mobile etc you may consider it, however they vet my tell you because of age it is prohibited. Poor dog, try to limit activity to not hurt the other leg. I do here a brace can help.

Old dog like that doesn’t “have to have” a tplo. Can get lateral suture surgery for a fraction of the cost and that will at least stabilize the knee enough for him to live out a normal old dog life. Most 14 yo dogs don’t have to run marathons but you won’t them be comfortable enough to get up walk to the food bowl and outside to the bathroom. Other options people have mentioned for rest can help with some dogs but they usually develop arthritis

Let it heal on its own. 14 year old dog < 5000 dollars. Easy choice.

14 year old mixed hound dog. It is really hard to justify 5k, and possibly 10k (if the other tears) for the surgery right now, with a family and bills everything else.
How is this even a debate???... let nature take its course... you tripping even going to get that diagnosis for a 14 year old dog... torn ACL as if he a running back

5 year old Pit mix tore both, two years apart. There were two options, we chose the most expensive option, it was about 4K each. She runs and jumps again like she’s a puppy. We call her golden legs. She’s back to mauling kids and being trashy with no issues.
14 years old is a hard decision. It’s hard watching them suffer. Personally I’ll spend every dime on her until she’s gone, but do what you think is right. Good luck!
Also, the surgeon told us after the first one tore that the other would eventually tear in two years. He was almost right on the date.

I’m so sorry, it’s hard to know when time is nearing. Is she on good supplements?

A friend who always has German Shepherds was moving to a new house and the dog was on the second floor and saw another dog outside the open window and jumped tearing it's ACL.
Vet wanted $$$$$ to fix and he found an old timey Vet in Hammond area that treated the dog with a leg brace and the knee healed.
Look for someone like this

I got my lab’s done when she was young. It was a great decision but Idk what I’d do if she needed it now

With the crazy cost of making it from month to month in this economy, I could not see any justification to put out that kind of money for a dog's surgery, much less one that 14 yrs. old and statistically nearing the end of its life if it hasn't surpassed that already.

Bro. It’s not going to be difficult to deal with. Let the dog live out its remaining years without surgery

Thanks for all the advice.
As of now, giving him pain medication, glucosamine, anti-inflammatory meds, letting him rest, and getting him a good a good brace and going to let this ride out for now.
It doesn't seem wise to spend the money on surgery, as tight as things are these days. We love our dog, but can't dish out the dough needed for it right now. Hopefully it can heal on its own.

No. This advice is beyond stupid. He clearly has no idea what the rehab involves. 6 months to a year of no running. The dog is 14. Leave him alone. He’ll be fine.

I’ve done the surgery twice. Once for my lab and another time when my Aussie jumped off the bed. Not going to make them be in pain the rest of their lives plus I’m a softie for the canines. Vet always worked with us on payment.

Are there any options outside of surgery? 14 year old mixed hound dog. It is really hard to justify 5k, and possibly 10k (if the other tears) for the surgery right now, with a family and bills everything else. Has anyone had any luck with other options such as braces that work?
Our dog had two TPLOs, both legs. We've spent well over $10k on our dog, and would spend as much as necessary if the prognosis is good.
She is going to be 11 in February -- very active dog, gets tired quicker than ehr younger years, but very happy dog.
I'm going against the grain here, but I say if a vet is okay with it, the biggest thing to worry about is the anesthesia. No other health issues? Get the surgery.

Sounds like you are doing great. The risk of arthritis from not having a surgical repair is moot due to age.
