They'll take your dog to get a rabies test
You'll get a citation and a court date
You'll have to pay the injured person
Keep you fricking dog on a leash or inside a fence FFS
It's not that difficult.

Basically, it is a “one free bite” rule
What if the breed is generally known to have a dangerous propensity, e.g., pit bulls? Do they get one free mauling? Do those carry strict liability or can the dog owner just say, “it had never bitten anyone before, so how was I supposed to know it might latch on to the child’s neck and kill them”?

I have a coworker whose dog bit a UPS driver…the driver sued the coworker and his insurance. Ended up costing the dog’s owner an asssload of money.
His address was blacklisted by both UPS and Fedex as a result, plus he had a nice long visit from local constabulary and the local dogcatcher. (dogcatcher was already out for the dog a couple times. Paul walked out front door to find him stalking pooch with his noose on a pole day. Pizza delivery was a no-go too as he put delivery guy on top of car once. Dog was racist, all the victims had 1 thing in common)

Depends on the county/city laws. My brothers dog got loose and killed at cat. He had to pay $1500 and make adjustments to his house to show it won’t happen again. If it happened in my county nothing would have happened to him.

Keep a sharp lookout for the process server.

Mailman should bite him back

Happened to me except my dog was in a fenced in yard and the mail carrier came in the yard. I got summoned for a meeting with postmaster. Our house was blacklisted and I had to go to the PO to pick up any packages. A new carrier started last year and started delivering here again so we must have fallen off the blacklist.

Family's, down the street, dog bit the mailman on two separate times. The parish forced them to put the dog down..

Poor pup got put in doggie jail for a week
Had a family dog do 2 tours in jail when I was a kid. One not our fault the other probably could have cost some real money in today's litigious social climate.

Rabies, death, survival and wrongful death actions filed by survivors. Or at least that’s the preferred situation for one’s law practice.

Okay, but what if I have a walk-up mail box on my porch. I don’t have to leash my dog on my property. If my dog goes from the backyard to the front, bites the mailman on my property, how did the dog do anything wrong. That’s the dogs natural instinct.

What kind of dog? Golden lab, Dachshund, Shitsue... what?

Your relative shouldn’t worry too much longer. I’m sure the dog will get hit by a car soon enough if relative let’s it runaround loose.
Your relative sounds like a cat owner

Dog bit mailman. Mailman needs stitches. Anyone familiar with what happens? Does the post office come back to dog owner for payment? No….not my dog. A relative was asking if I knew
I imagine that the dog owner’s home insurance will cover it

This isn’t about the dog doing dog things- it is the responsibility of the dog owner and protecting people from their dog doing dog things
